student revit stuck in viewer mode cannot enter activation code

I reinstalled Revit 2015, ON A NEW PC, using my student account and downloading the installer from the student portal.

after install was asked for the serial# and prod. key which was given by the download page when downloading installer:

Autodesk Revit 2015 - WIN 64 - EN
Your serial number: xxx-xxxxxxxx
Product key: 829G1

Then after entering this info and logging in, I was not prompted for any activation codes, but I did receive a new on by email from Autodesk shoftly after installation on the new PC) the first line and last line of my activation code:

Edited

Upon running Revit on the new PC, I immediately get a dialog saying that Revit is in VIEWER MODE. (see screenshot image attached)

If I ATTEMPT TO ACCESS the license status dialog either from the License menu under the main R menu or from the help -> about dialog - the same Viewer Mode dialog appears. There is no licensing information dialog where I can re-enter the new activation code,.

please advise how do I fix this problem as I am a student and dearly need to save my work.

I tried several advices from the community forums with no luck including:

  • LTU (license transfer utility), I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD NOT EXPORT ANY MORE TIMES.
  • deleting the .data files from the FLEXNET DIRECTORY (windows 7 C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet\*)

SEE ATTACHED SCREENSHOTS OF THE DIALOG I RECEIVE.

Thank you,
Rodica

I installed Revit 2015 on my friends PC and then I purchased a new PC and downloaded and installed

Revit 2015  using my student account login and password, and the download page issued me

the same "Serial Number xxx-xxxxxxxx"

The problem is the new installation is STUCK IN VIEWER MODE. When I first open

the Revit application a popup dialog appears saying Viewer Mode, cannot save any projects.

(see attached photo)

I need to be able to save my work.  I cannot use my friends computer anymore, he is leaving town.

We tried to Export the License from the first computer but my computer also required an Export from

the License Transfer Tool, then I 1was locked out, with a message saying I have done too many Exports

from this PC

I tried deleting all the licensing files under the FLEX directory on my PC, that made no difference.

Both installations are stand alone setups. We plan to uninstall Revit from the 1st PC so it will only be

on 1 but for now, we need to get the license working on the 2nd PC before we uninstall from the 1st.

[PLEASE ADVISE ME] how to quickly remedy this problem. I understand that I am probably only allowed

to run Revit Student edition on one computer at a time, and that is what I am trying to do, but the

licensing software is not allowing this.

apparently this is an ongoing issue that was not resolved. I have this same exact problem.

I followed this threads advice to delete the licensing files under the following directory:

C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet\*.*

and when restarting Revit 2015, it still is STUCK IN VIEWER MODE.

I WAS NOT PROMPTED to Reactivate license or anything...

SEE THE ATTACHED DIALOG THAT POPS UP everytime the Revit app is opened or if I goto main menu -> licensing status=

PLEASE ADVISE ASAP!

THANKS

I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH A 2ND INSTALLATION OF REVIT 2015 STUDENT EDITION I INSTALLED ON A NEW PC, IT IS STUCK IN VIEWER MODE. I ATTEMPTED WHAT LITTLE SUPPORT I COULD FIND ON THE COMMUNITY FORUMS AND HELP GUIDES WITH NO LUCK.

apparently this is an ongoing issue that was not resolved for several students on this forum. I have this same exact problem as them i believe

I ATTEMPTED the Export Import function using the License Transfer Utility and was locked out from too many attempts. These are Standalone installations on the 2 PCs. One is the old PC and one is the new PC.

I followed another "community experts" advice AND deleted the licensing files under the following directory:
C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet\*.*

this was supposed to FORCE Revit to renew the activation, but my software installation did nothing of the sort,

it still is in Viewer Mode even without the licensing files which I deleted.

I WAS NOT PROMPTED to Reactivate license or anything...

SEE THE ATTACHED SCREENSHOT OF THE DIALOG THAT POPS UP everytime the Revit app is opened or if I goto main menu -> licensing status=

LASTLY, I CHECKED FOR THE PULLOUT, QUESTION MARK HIDDEN IN THE CORNER OF THE LICENSING MENU UNDER THE "BIG R" YOU DESCRIBED FOR THE OTHER POOR STUDENT YOU "HELPED OUT"... AND NO THERE IS NO SUCH FEATURE ON MY INSTALLATION OF REVIT 2015!!! ITS NOT VISIBLE.  ALL I SEE IS THE VIEWER MODE MESSAGE DIALOG (SCREENSHOT ATTACHED TO THIS REPLY... ) THIS DIALOG IS ALL I GET FROM THE LICENSE MENU. I CLICKED ALL OVER THE LICENSING POPUP DIALOG AND THERE IS NO FLYOUT MENU OR DIALOG ANYWHERE.  I ALSO LOOKED WITHIN THE MENUS UNDER THE BIG R MENU AND NOTHING WAS VISIBLE SIMILAR TO WHAT YOU DESCRIBED!!!

I fully intend to continously slam these community boards with description of this problem until somebody posts a legitimate solution and I see a student respond with a Thank you.  As of yet, none of the students have replied with any sort of resolution on this issue.  Perhaps the squeeky wheel will get the oil...

PLEASE ADVISE ASAP!

THANKS

I DO NOT GET THAT LICENSE STATUS DIALOG LIKE THE ONE YOU POSTED IN THIS THREAD. INSTEAD I GET A DIALOG

THAT ONLY SAYS REVIT IS IN VIEWER MODE AND I CANNOT SAVE ANYTHING.

SEE ATTACHED SCREENSHOT OF WHAT I GET FROM CLICKING ON THE LICENSE STATUS MENU UNDER THE BIG R MENU

PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO FIX THIS...

P.S. I HAD INSTALLATION PROBLEMS BECAUSE MY PC IS NEW AND HAS NEWER LIBRARIES PREINSTALLED FOR VISUALL C++ REDISTRIBUTABLES FOR 2005 2008 AND 2012 x86 x64  SO IF OLLOWED THE EXPERT ADVISE TO EDIT MY SETUP.INI FILE TO NOT ATTEMPT INSTALLING THOSE PREREQUISITIE LIBRARIES WHICH I ALREADY HAD INSTALLED. AFTER THIS THE INSTALL WAS A SUCCESS BUT NOW I AM STUCK IN VIEWER  MODE. I DOUBT IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE INSTALL BUT MORE SIMPLY THE LICENSING FUNCTION OF YOUR SOFTWARE, BUT I MENTION THIS ANYWAYS JUST IN CASE.

THANKS

Comment to Tech Support / form admin: I don't believe what you did to  my posts has  helped me at all, nor did it help the other students whose threads I commented on.  ALL YOU DID WAS TAKE VISIBILITY OF THE PROBLEM AWAY FROM ALL THE OTHER STUDENTS WHO ARE POSTING THE SAME QUESTION IN THE OTHER COMMUNITY FORUMS... WHERE I POSTED ALL OF THE COMMENTS WHICH YOU COMBINED HERE ON THIS THREAD,,,, how can me and the other students discuss the problem amongst each other if you hide our comments away and segregate them??? GEEZ!

HOW ABOUT TAKING THE TIME TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION! A REAL SOLUTION TO MY QUESTIONS???

---

i resolved it on my own by the following process:

  1. EXPORTING THE LICENSE TO THE AUTODESK SERVERS from the first installation.
  2. EXPORT LICENSE FROM PC#1 using LTU (Found Under: License Tranfer Utility - start menu -> programs -> Autodesk: ) ,
  3. UNINSTALL REVIT INSTALLATION from PC#2,
  4. DELETE THE LICENSING FILES UNDER: c:\programdata\flexnet\   and then
  5. REINSTALL REVIT on PC#2.
  6. Enter the Serial# and Product Key No, on PC#2 when asked by the Activation Wizard,

after all this, finally had fully licensed student edition of Revit 2015 running on 2nd PC.(#2)

note: INITIALLY THE LICENSE import function did not work BECAUSE on the 2nd PC because I had already installed and attempted to activate before exporting the license from the first PC)

Notes for other students:

IF YOU INSTALL on a 2nd PC using the same student account, serial# and prod id as the first installed PC, you will likely encounter VIEWER MODE ONLY on the NEW INSTALLATION.

I had a previous install activated successfully on a different PC before moving to a new PC.  I recommend exporting the license from that first PC or OLD PC before installing and attempting activation on a NEW PC

Please help. I am experiencing the same problem. I am also using two pc's. One has had Revit 2015 for a while now and I have only just successfully installed Revit 2016 on my other. But when I open Revit 2016 it says i'm in Viewer Mode. Is there another way to work around it other than having to uninstall and reinstall.. i've done this several times and each time takes at least 3hrs.
