Purchase and install a previous version of Inventor/Autodad Suite

The company I work for installed Autodesk Inventor Suite 2009 somewhere around Aug. 2009. We purchased two license and a subscription for one year (which included an upgrade to 2010). Our parent company oversees also uses the 2010 version. We would like to add one more more license in the US of the 2010 version. Someone here located a new, unopened copy on an online auction site. First of all is it legal to buy this software and if so what do we do about obtaining a license? Thank you in advance for any help.

As always with online resale, buyer beware.  You cannot purchase "new old stock" licenses, even if you have an unopened box product from somewhere else.  What counts is not the CD/DVD/USB/whatever but the activation after installation.

While a new license includes rights to using older versions it's limited to a select number of previous versions (4 at this time, if memory serves).  And all new licenses are subscription/rental-model type *not* perpetual.

Don't forget, there are valid reasons why such old versions are no longer actively supported.  They may have problems on modern hardware and operating systems, such as needing hacks to install, failures on even simple system updates, and no support for modern display resolutions.

Adding to @dgorsman reply.

In the US it is illegal to sale and re-purchase actual Autodesk license (serial #).   Overseas the rules are more relax.  Yes you can get the media but without a serial # you can only use if for the 30 days.  In addition 2009 and 2010 are no longer support and retired.  In order to get more license you would have to subscribe to  (rent) the 2019 version which entitles you to 2016 to 2019 version.   In the end its not worth the risk (possible audits/fines) and even if you somehow got a serial # for 2010, doesn't mean Autodesk has to honor or activate it.

Thank you for you reply. I thought as much but wanted to make sure. I will pass this on to the owners, Richard.
