Plug-in valid GUI, but reports compiled against too old version in Batch Mode

Title pretty much says it all.

Compile a plug-in for 2014. 

It loads fine in Maya interactive (GUI)

but if I run a simple batch version:

maya -batch -script my.mel;

and my.mel just has a simple 

loadPlugin myplugin

It says error plug-in compile against too old a version of the API.

How is that possible.  ie does batch use a different API than interactive?

Oh and this on Linux btw
