Launching Maya prompts "Autodesk Maya is about to exit" dialogue and closes application

I can't find ANYTHING about this issue anywhere, so I'm finally turning to here.

Basically, every time I launch Maya, I get an "Autodesk Maya is about to exit. Save your work before you close?" dialogue box. Both options causes Maya to close, and the X doesn't work. Shutting the box through task manager shuts Maya entirely as well. Choosing to save the scene and then opening that file causes the same issue. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Maya at least 5 times now, and restarted my computer countless times. Both the 2024 and 2025 versions do this, but the issue started with the 2024 version. If anyone has ANY idea that could help, that would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently a college student, so I have the free education Maya plan.

Hi @amh3192

That sounds super frustrating! Have you gotten Maya open on this machine in the past? If so, when did the issue start? Was it after a Maya or Windows software update? If you have never gotten Maya open on this machine, i would definitely check your specs against the system requirements here, as well as update your drivers.
It could also be a licensing issue, so I have moved this thread over to the I&L boards so others in the community here can help troubleshoot!

Warm regards,

Hi!

Yeah, I've been using Maya on this machine for most of the school year now. One day it simply launched with that error when it had launched perfectly fine the day before. As far as I'm aware, there was no Windows or Maya update around that time, although if there was a necessary Maya update I may have missed, I should have it now since I've reinstalled Maya several times since. I don't remember the exact date, but the issue started in the last week of this March.

I'll go through my drivers and make sure they're all up to date. Thanks for the quick reply! Hopefully someone over on the I&L boards can help as well. :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:

Hmmm, and this is all without plugins installed, correct? And have you reset the preferences? And this happens on a blank Maya load as well as when opening a file? Maya doesn't Auto update, and 2025 just came out. It's extra strange that its across both 2024 and 2025.

Let me know, but i am also not seeing much about this kind of issue, but not the thing you want to feel special about I'm guessing.

Hi again,

I've tried installing Maya with and without the plugins, and it happens every time. I've also reset the preferences multiple times. Sorry for getting back to you so late, but the situation has changed. Now, the pop-up still appears, but selected "quit without saving" opens Maya anyways and I can use it like normal. I'm not sure how long this fix is going to last though, since the pop-up still shows up when I first load Maya, but I have projects for school to finish so I'm not too concerned about it right now.

Once I turn in my final project, I plan on doing the most thorough wipe of all Maya related files and applications I can find on my laptop, and hopefully that changes something.

Thanks for your input! I hope one of us can find the source of this problem, but like you said, I seem to be the only one with this issue :cara_con_sudor_frío:

@amh3192 ,

I'm happy to hear that you are at least temporarily able to open Maya now! When you are able to do a more clean wipe, I would suggest following the steps in this help article, just in case there's something there neither of us thought to try!

Let me know how it goes, and best of luck with your project!!
