Autodesk 3D MAX 2019 closes while initializing

I updated to 3dsmax 2019 yesterday and have yet to be able to actually open it. 2018 has worked fine, but after updating to 2019 the splash page only says it is initializing 3dsmax before closing itself. I have tried disabling my antivirus, reinstalling several times, and have quickly ran out of options from any other searches I've done. If it were possible to use 2018 I would, but I absolutely need to use 2019.

Hi @Anonymous @Anonymous @Anonymous

Sorry to hear about this upgrade experience! Does the app provide you an opportunity to send in a crash report, and if so do you have the report numbers handy? I can check for clues on my end.

Otherwise, a few quick tricks that may help get it running the first time:

-Sometimes the app needs to write a few registry keys on first launch and requires enhanced permissions, so you could try running the application explicitly as an administrator.

-If you have dual graphics hardware, as is the case in some laptops, you can opt to "run 3ds Max with performance GPU". It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but most of the time this is accessible from the right click menu on the desktop shortcut icon.

-You can try running 3ds Max from command line (https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/3DSMax/files/GUID-8DD74086-FE75-4585-9BD3-ED22BEE4A39C-htm.html). If this ends up working out, you can modify your shortcut path to make it always start in a quiet command line mode by making it look like this:
%comspec% /c "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2019\3dsmax.exe"

Hello @Anonymous & @Anonymous,

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this initialization problem. Some of the common solutions to this issue are listed below if you have tried some of these give it a try again or skip it:

  1. Sign in as Administrator
  2. Make sure you have an updated graphics card driver by checking the manufacturer's website (Assign the correct Graphics Card)
  3. Temporarily disable your Antivirus software & Firewall
  4. Temporarily disable UAC on  Windows 7 or Windows 10
  5. Adjust Lan Settings & Proxy Settings
  6. Update your product with the latest service pack or Hotfixes by visiting the Autodesk website or account
  7. Locate the install log or Control Panel for Microsoft Visual C++ to make sure they have properly installed (try repair or uninstall & reinstall)
  8. Create a New User Account (Full Control user permissions)

Let us know how it goes.

Hello @Anonymous & @Anonymous,

Have you both tried to apply the 3ds Max 2019.2 Update from your Autodesk Accounts to see if that helps? This update includes Service Packs & Updates from previous releases, so just apply 3ds Max 2019.2.

Also, please let us what operating system you are running 3ds Max on.
