AutoCAD does not exit -- stays as background process

We have AutoCAD 2020 running on Microsoft Server 2012.  We use it to automatically run lisp scripts to generate drawings.  It worked fine (for years) up until a few weeks ago.  Now AutoCAD does not exit cleanly -- it stays in memory as a background process -- and after so many instances are in memory, AutoCAD stops responding.

Opening AutoCAD without a drawing and immediately exiting still has the same problem.

Anyone know what might be going on?

That is an unsupported OS so you seeing issues is not surprising, and there is no expectation that Autodesk will never fix any issues you do discover.

Refresh your memory about which OS variants are supported here once you ensure you have all the 2020 updates installed (AutoCAD 2020.1.4 is the latest version, ABOUT command will confirm what you have installed) https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-r...

Have you solved this?

If interested I have an app that automatically closes hanged acad.exe processes.

Running AutoCAD on a Windows Server is a violation of the License Agreement.  You would fail an audit and likely be fined for this, just FYI.
