autocad 2016 error 1603

I am trying to install Autocad 2016 and am getting error 1603. My latest attempt is the log below. We have a silent install file on a server that I have previously used to successfully install the product on other workstations. I don't know much about Autocad installs so I am not sure how to decipher the below. Please help! Thank you. I tried uninstalling .NET and C++ Redistributables, and then running the install again, and that did not work.

Hello mkoGDZRJ and welcome to the Autodesk community!

It looks like you’re seeing Error 1603. Error 1603 is a generic error generated by the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) when a problem occurred during the installation of your Autodesk product. The following article(s) should help you resolve the problem:

Hey @Anonymous

Not sure if the solution offered by Otto the magnificant bot helped; but you can start with checking the basic things which can cause this error

  • A file/folder for MSV C++ could be locked and cannot be overwritten cusing C++ verion being envoked by Autodesk installer to fail
  • Clear the %TEMP% folder and older Temp Installation Files (If full those can kill the new installation half way)
  • Not sure where you got the installation files from but they might be corrupt/incomplete and you might want to try re-downloading from Autodesk Virtual Agent HERE
  • If you installing on a client/target machine; check the short file name creation (This may kill the C++ download as well considering where it resides)

See this link also for the same error during silent installation:

I'm confused..   You say you are installing AutoCAD 2016 but your installation information is for Inventor 2016...   Are you installing Inventor or AutoCAD?

@Mark.Lancaster

I think he meant to say Autodesk... Autocorrect sometimes changes it to autocad if the latter is added to dictionary (But again I might be wrong lol)

Either ways the error is cause by both but not related to both (Always blame MICROSOFT)

Looks as though you are trying to install from a network deployment.  You should try to install locally from a full download version instead.

I would recommend that you try downloading your product using the virtual assistant by following the directions here:

I had to re-download the installation files, as suggested by a few of the posters above. It then worked after that. Guess it was something wrong with the network installation files that had previously been used.

Hello RDAUO,

I'm having the same issue. What you are saying sounds completely logical as the installation is interrupted right at the beginning (at the Microsoft Visual C++ installation). However I could not figure out how to unlock the Visual C++ files. Would be kind enough and tell me how to do it? I have already tried googling it and installed a few small applications but also couldn't figure out how to make them work.

Many thanks 🙂

Welcome to the community...

If you want someone's attention please use @RDAOU..  Because RDAOU may no longer be monitoring this actual posting..  Smiley Wink

In Windows Control Panel/Program and Features/Add&Remove programs, remove all the versions of C++ Redistributable (32b and 64b).   Then try your installation again.  The installation will put the required C++ information back on.
