After upgrading to Revit 2021, get error "User Licence has Expired" at startup

Hi, we have recently upgraded in work from Revit 2019 to 2021 (full subscription) and now myself and another in work keep getting an error message before Revit will shut down. I do have an open case, but was wondering if anyone else is getting the same issues?

We are aware that our internet which is not brilliant keeps dropping and maybe this could be contributing to the problem. Having to restart Revit every half hour to an hour is not fun.

Have you updated the License Manager on the server?

As far as I am aware we are on individual licences rather than a network licence, I update the licence from the Autodesk Desktop App last week, after this message started to appear.

First verify what type of license you have.

Make sure Revit has all the updates. If that still doesn't work, try asking in the Installation and Licensing forum.

Upon viewing the licence manager it tells me I have a commercial licence, Term Extendable and no expire date.

Autodesk has made recent changes to the way it does licensing. You need to make sure everything related to licensing is updated.

This is a Revit 2021 licensing issue that we are currently investigating.  Answers to the following questions may help to accelerate our troubleshooting effort:
Is there a specific command that leads to this message being displayed or does it happen sporadically?

Do you have other Autodesk products installed on this system?  If so which products/releases are installed?  Also, are other Autodesk products running when this message is encountered?

It first started after clicking on load family, but now it has increased its frequency  and will appear after about half hour of work. We also have run Autocad Lt2020 on our machines.

I should also add that we run Windows through Parrallels on a Mac, but never had any issues using Revit 2019

I have gotten this error alert when attempting to link another Revit file in.

Is there any update on this? We are still getting the error after any linking in Revit 2021.

Hi, the last update I had from Autodesk was the patch would be included in the next update. Not really helpful as we are still having this problem.

Unfortunately, the Revit 2021.1.2 Hotfix does not include a fix for this issue because we have not been able to identify the root of the problem. If you have encountered this issue, the best course of action is to contact Autodesk product support, log an official case, and they will work to collect the necessary data to assist in our troubleshooting efforts.

We have found that the unexpected loss of license occurs after running particular commands that display a Windows file selection dialog. To date, Load Family, Load PDF, and Import CAD are the most common commands that lead to the license loss.

In addition to contacting product support, here are a few questions that may help us in our troubleshooting efforts:

  1. When this license loss occurs, dismiss the message and review the list of shortcuts in the left column of the Windows file selection dialog that is displayed. By default, Windows includes the following shortcuts: History, Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, Favorites, Desktop, Imperial Library, and Metric Library. Are there any custom shortcuts is your scenario and if so, we do these shortcuts point to? Does removing custom shortcuts resolve the license loss issue?

  2. When this license loss occurs, dismiss the message and make note of the default location in this dialog. Is the default location on the local hard drive or on a network drive? If the default location is on a network drive, please try browsing on a location on your local hard drive, select a file from there, and complete the command. After this exit the Revit session, launch a new Revit session, and run the same command. Do these action lead to the loss of license?

  3. What add-ons, plug-ins, or third party apps are installed for Revit 2021?

I found out this morning that the hotfix does not help. And I already have a case open with Autodesk, as this has been going on since March/ April time this year with no resolution in site. As I am an employee the problem is a pain, but the real person to suffer as it was is my boss who paid out for the full Revit programme and has his employee in his ear every time we have to restart revit.

I can ask our users to send me this but it it wide spread and they all have different add-in's. It all is based on what they are working on. This will be a lot of stuff from our company if you want all of this from each user. If you want me to send you this info from one user I can. Please let me know but this seems to be a bigger issue than what you are talking about. I know of 20 users having this issue and we only have 38 users.

This issue is difficult to troubleshoot because there are not many customers experiencing this problem and we have not been able to reproduce the error.  This leads us to believe there is a missing variable (other installed software or default location in the file selection dialog) and our current effort is to gather as much information as possible from the impacted users.

With enough feedback, we hope to be able to identify the missing variable, which should unblock our efforts to resolve this issue.  With this in mind, please contact Autodesk product support and supply them with details about your particular environment.

I am not seeing this issue on startup, but rather when I am working on a BIM 360 model and go to "Insert from File". I then get alerted that my license has expired and I have 10 minutes to complete tasks before it shuts down....then it shuts down in 10 minutes.

Got the same error this morning as well.. Seems to pop up after trying to call any command from the 'Insert' tab (including when using keyboard shortcuts). Exactly in 10min Revit shuts down.

Individual licence

Is there any update from Autodesk on this subject? We are still having this problem on a daily basis. All the updates and patches have been applied, but there doesn't seem to be a solution.
