Hi,
I downloaded 3dsmax 2017 demo, and installed on Windows 10. The program was running fine, everything was works. Untill one day I started max, and mentalray.dlz failed to initialize (error 127) specific procedure cannot be found.
I did try to reinstall max, delete all user data but it's still give me an erorr 127 for mentalray.dlz.
Next, I tried to reinstall all VC Redist 2005,2008,2010,2012,2013,2015 and .Net repair.....still no change....
Uninstall windows update and try the windows restore point..... still give error 127 for mentalray.dlz
I downloaded fresh copy 3dsmax 2017 demo, and try fresh installation still give me error 127....
Already did sfc /scannow and dism /restorehealth and the result is good (no windows file system violations)
Try to uninstall mentalray, and reinstall the renderer and plugin feature (found in 3dsmax installation folder) still no luck....
Can anyone help me on this ??
Thank You
Based on the troubleshooting you've done it doesn't sound like a corrupt install. You may want to try resetting your 3ds max settings. Also, if you have recently installed any firewall or security software make sure it isn't blocking port 7000-7001.
Hi @ariodeh,
I know this is a very late response, but I saw your thread and wanted to see if this suggestion might help.
If possible, try copying all of the contents from Plugins\NVIDIA\Bin folder directly in the root directory: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017. (Do not Cut the contents from the folder.) Start 3ds Max again and the error should not appear.
Hopefully this will help, as this happened on my machine previously. I copying and pasting these contents I was finally able to get mentalray and iray installed and working great with no mentalray.dlz error.
Thanks!
Hello,
I tried to reinstall 3ds max and this error still remains 😞
I am not sure why it was so important to discard mental ray from 3ds max
because right now I have none...
I tried reinstalled it, remove it, install service pack, remove it, move the file from plugins/Nvidia to the max root.
Nothing helped.
Hello @panfotograf,
Sorry for the inconvenience. It seems like you had it installed already and you removed it. This is a known issue that can be resolved by conducting one of the following.
2. If you have selected it then try Resetting 3ds Max / 3ds Max Design to default user profile settings
Please let me know how it goes.

I have the same issue, it happened after unstalling the new security fix last night. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling 3ds max, resetting 3ds max to default, copying plugin files to root folder, reinstalling mentalray / iray plugins.
The "missing" file is indeed present in its appropriate folder.
Any news on this one? I guess the next step to try is the completely clean uninstall explained in natashal84 's signature link, I just would like to know if there is any hope it will solve the problem.
Have you tried downloading and installing the newest version of mental ray (3.14.1.4) from your Autodesk Account?
Please let us know if this helps!

Thank you for your follow-up. It turned out I had installed the wrong version of mental ray. I thought I had to use the SP3 one for my perpetual license, which I now discovered was not the case. Works like a charm now!
That didn't work for me, but what DID work was copying "mentalray.dlz" from the installer folder:
\x64\Mentalray\Program Files\Autodesk\Plugins\NVIDIA\Plugins
to this location, replacing the file that was already there: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\Plugins\NVIDIA\Plugins
error gone and now able to render with mental ray and my mental ray proxies are rendering (which they would not before)
