Vault 2018 and Inventor 2017

We are in the process of moving to Inventor 2018.  We have already updated our vault server to Vault 2018 and I have installed the 2018 Vault Client on all the workstations.  We are still using Inventor 2017 however, until we can get some other details worked out.

The problem with this setup, is that when Inventor 2017 starts (Vault autologin is enabled), this will consume (1) vault professional license.  Now when the users starts Vault Professional 2018, it grabs another network license.  I only have a limited amount of licenses, so this eats up all my licenses and some users can't access vault.

Is this the way it has always been or is this a "new feature" for Vault 2018? Is there any way to not have it consume two licenses?  It doesnt consume two licenses when you start two sessions of Vault Pro 2017 or Vault Pro 2018.

yes with 2017 & 2018 the licensing changed with Vault the client now grabs a license upon launch of the client not on log in of vault

In addition to @DarrenP information..  A test you may want to do..  Launch Vault Client 2018 and then see if you launch Inventor 2017/log into Vault if it consume 2 license still.   There was a change in the license in 2018 where a lower application is launched first and then a vertical product is launched next, the license would consume two..  Now this has to do with Collections but it may also impact Vault as well.

It doesn't appear that it matters the order that the products are launched. Either way it consumes two licenses, which really stinks.  I don't understand why it does this really.  To me, it seems like it should only consume one license.

Just checking in, the information provided is correct Vault 2017 & Vault 2018 would each take up a license = two licenses pulled.

Now we are using Inventor 2018 and Vault 2018.  Only one Vault license is pulled when I open both Inventor and Inventor.

However, if I open a session of Office Excel 365 (already have Inventor open), this causes another network license of Vault to be pulled.  Is this the way its supposed to work?  Has it always been this way or is this something new to 2018?

There has been changes in how licensing works for 2018..  Can you confirm the user name who pulled the Excel/Vault separate license in lmtools (Status tab).  Is it different information than your Vault license pulled.

Username is the same.

Here is what I have found just by opening/closing applications. If the user is using Vault 2018\Inventor 2018\Office 365.... then they can have all three of these open (and be logged into vault) and this will only consume 1 Vault license.

If the user uses Vault 2018\Inventor 2018\Office 2013.... then they will consume 2 vault licenses.

If the user opens another application...i.e., Excel 2013, Vault 2017.... etc, they will still only be consuming 2 licenses.

So, the way I see it, is that it will consume one license for 2018 products (Vault, Inventor, Autocad, Office 365...) then if any other products are used (Inventor 2017, Vault 2017, older flavors of Excel)..... then an additional license will be required.

Is this the way its supposed to work?

Hello @karthur1,

When Inventor is launched it will use one Inventor license. If the Vault add-in is installed then you will also be using a Vault license once logged into Vault. So this one user will consume two licenses. 

Since Vault 2017 and newer versions, if you log out of Vault you do not release the Vault license you would have to close Inventor and reopen it to release the Vault license.

The Vault Server allows older Vault Clients to connect to the Vault Server if they use 2016 Vault Client and older to connect to Vault 2017 Server and newer, because of the changes to the license model. The customer would need to have Vault Network License for this to work and not 2017 Vault standalone. They would also need a >hotfix< to stop the Vault Client from taking two licenses. It's best to use to have them all on the same version, CAD Tools, Vault Client and the Vault Server. Please take a look at the >Vault 2018 Help Page<.
