I visited the Autodesk website to download 3ds Max and obtained the web installer for the 2026 version in order to test it under the free trial option. However, when attempting to install the software, I immediately encountered the pop-up message: “Unable to install. An error occurred while preparing the installation.”
I searched the Autodesk Support resources and found the article titled “‘Unable to install. An error occurred while preparing the installation.’ when launching an Autodesk install package on Windows.” I followed all the recommended troubleshooting steps, but the issue persisted.
I then attempted to install the 2025 version of 3ds Max, but the exact same error occurred. I also tried using the Direct Download installation method, but the issue was unchanged. When I attempted the Custom Download method, a different pop-up appeared: “Failed to initialize DownloadManager!” After finding the corresponding Autodesk Support article (“‘Failed to initialize DownloadManager!’ when trying to install Autodesk software”) and performing all suggested steps, the problem still remained unresolved.
After contacting a support agent, I was provided with a direct .7z download link for the 2026 version. However, when I run the setup.exe, the Autodesk installer window opens and remains indefinitely stuck on “Preparing”, without progressing.
At this point, I am out of options and unsure how to proceed. I would appreciate guidance on what steps I should take next to successfully install the software.
