Subscription question

My subscription ran out today.  Max 2018 was released two days earlier.

If I do not renew, I am still eligible to use Max 2018 and any bugfixes that come out going forward, is that right?

I just won't be eligible for an extension or new release... right?

Are you referring to a rental-model "Subscription" license?  Or your maintenance "Subscription" on a permanent license?

Very good question.  I forgot they totally changed the nomenclature.

I was on the maintenance plan with perpetual license for many years.  That is what just lapsed.  I think they originally called it subscription many moons ago.

Hello @Anonymous,

Please review this information regarding maintenance subscriptions. If auto-renewal was not selected & it expired, access to your services, or benefits may become an issue. You can renew through your Autodesk Account. Your maintenance plan provided all of the following click here, otherwise you will just have your perpetual software with limited support & limited software enhancements.

Renewing Your Subscription or Maintenance Plan from Autodesk Account

Yes you will have access to the 2018 version but only the 2018 version if you don't renew..  You will be entitled to hot fixes/service packs but no related subscription benefit features.   My advice.. Being so new (the 2018 version)..  Do you want to risk your business just on this version (being so new)?   What happens if something doesn't work for you?  And you would have nothing to fall back on since you're not entitled to any other version.

Wait a minute!

I have a perpetual license and was on the maintenance plan up until a few days ago.    You're saying I'm not allowed to run Max 2017 now, if my maintenance plan lapses?

Even though every single new release of Max has been NOT PRODUCTION READY for the last 10 years at least... and is not safely usable until SP1 comes out?   And even that is sometimes questionable.

Seriously, what are you talking about?

Has Autodesk lost its collective MIND?

Does Autodesk know what "perpetual" means?

It sounds like you don't understand what a perpetual license on a an active maintenance plan means. It means when it's active you are entitled the current release plus the use of three legacy versions. When it's no longer active you are only entitled to use the current release version.. Perpetual doesn't mean you can use all versions.

Update:  So it sounds like you elected to not renew. Is that correct?   You can get back active but you will need to subscribe to a term based license and then you can use 2015 to 2018

Please review the agreement and the terminate section (which tells you that you lose your rights when the maintenance plan term expires) in that agreement.  Now I'm only speculating at this point but with the release 2018 date so close to your termination date you may got lucky and you would be stuck on the 2017 version but your reseller or Autodesk would have to confirm that.

Hello @Anonymous,

I have pulled this information together for you. You can call to make sure to see what perpetual licenses you are entitled to, but you retain perpetual license rights for the most recent version of your software that you installed and activated under your maintenance plan.

Perpetual License Changes Information

Maintenance Plans: The end-of-sale of perpetual licenses only impacts the ability to purchase new perpetual licenses with a maintenance plan. If you currently have a maintenance plan, you will continue enjoying the benefits of maintenance as long as you continue to renew. After Autodesk discontinues the sale of perpetual licenses for a product, you will only be able to renew your maintenance plans for previously purchased perpetual licenses. No new perpetual licenses may be added to new or existing maintenance plans after we have discontinued the sale of perpetual licenses for that product.

If your maintenance plan expires you can continue using your perpetual licenses. However, you will lose maintenance benefits such as updates, access to previous versions, technical product support, flexible license rights, and access to select cloud services.

  • Version Rights: You retain perpetual license rights for the most recent version of your software that you installed and activated under your maintenance plan. For example, if you originally purchased a 2014 version of your software but upgraded to the 2016 version while your maintenance plan was active, you retain perpetual license rights to the 2016 version after your maintenance plan ends. You should download installation files and record your activation information for the most recent version activated under your maintenance plan for future use if needed.

Thank you for posting.
