Student access to AutoCAD!

Hi!

I am a teacher at a school and have used the bulk enroll tool to get all my students educational accounts for Autodesk software. Which actually worked pretty well. In the list that I can assign software, only fusion 360 exists. Is it possible to get AutoCAD added to this list?

The students are able to login to the software (AutoCAD 2022) we are using, but, they are promptly kicked out. Even though, they have a educational account at Autodesk.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

AutoCAD should be free to download / use for students. (unless this changed from a while ago) If I where you I would reach out to Autodesk and ask them the question, that or if you are working with a reseller maybe they can help you out with this.

Hi!

Thank you so much for the reply! Yes, I was told by a college that posting in the forums would be a place to start. Or, maybe no support occurs through the forums?

Yes, in the past students were granted access. But, with the move to user based authentication, each user is required to log into the software to be allowed to use it. The students are in the Autodesk system and verified as students. They should be allowed to use the software. But, keep getting kicked out. It should be working, but most definitely is not.

Any idea how to best access support?

Thanks!

Hi all that might be reading!

Just looking through this forum and it looks like authentication of student accounts seems to be problematic on the Autodesk side. If their anyone that can jump in to let me know if a resolution is possible in the short term? Any ideas how long a resolution might take? Just trying to keep my students in the loops as to what's going on with all this.

Thank you for anyone's input. 🙂

Hi @casey.mynott,

The user is mostly peer-2-peer support rather than Autodesk but you will see a few employees about.

As for student licenses, have you requested a Class License of AutoCAD?

If not then you can request from https://www.autodesk.com/education/edu-software/overview -> Click the class/lab tab and follow the instructions on the AutoCAD tile. You should then be able to assign AutoCAD licenses.

As for the students, do they see products assigned to them here: https://manage.autodesk.com/cep/#products-services/all?

Finally, for school computers, it may be worth using a school license as you can license far more machines if necessary.

Oh thank you for the information!

What I did is get the students signed up as students in the Autodesk system. Then, ideally, they could use the software at school, and, at home!

I will check the products assigned to them. On my end, if I bulk enroll students, the only option that exists is Fusion. No other Autodesk products exist in that linking process I have access to. I will get the students to look into their account end to see if any of that is linked.

A lab license is a good idea. I would go through our local district but unfortunately it's not as simple of a straight shot as the students being 'student users' in the Autodesk system and having access because of their educational purpose. I have picked the path of least resistance, I think.

I really appreciate you're time. I am going to work on this and report back.

Thank you so much!!! 🙂

Okay, just tried to get a license for the lab that my students are working in. It looks to start to work. I head over to AutoCAD and click get license. Then it redirects me to the individuals page, and then I am forced to chose download product. Something is wonky here. I am a teacher in the Autodesk system and have been able to enroll students from a bulk list. So, that (my user permissions) shouldn't be affecting my ability to get a license.

So, tried the lab license route, and, no go.

Will try to get the students to log in and see what products they might have access to for a license.

I'll report back what I find. 🙂

Okay, I had a student login and look to their products and services page. And, it's blank. So, I think this might be part of the problem. While they are tagged as students in the Autodesk system, they are not been given access to the products as such. I guess this route to gain student access involves the products that Autodesk has chosen to allow access through bulk enrolling students. If you bulk enroll students, you a locked into giving them access. And, the only choice in the list is, Fusion 360.

Other student who went the more traditional route of registering themselves seems to have worked as, they have access to the products they have installed. But, with that said, that's it. In my list, I have access to all the products if I so choose. All very interesting.

So, this is good information.

It seems that, those students will have to delete their account and start over it seems. Or, I get the license for the lab working correctly. Which at this time, it's not. I'll report back more that I find. 🙂

Update,

I initiated a chat support with Autodesk. It came down to, they don't know. Why I am having issues specifically with a lab license. I suspect it's something to do with my user permissions. But, I don't have evidence of that. Just a guess from dealing with years of software issues.

Anywho, I'll report back what I find. 🙂

Okay! This is the solution! With the help of our local IT, they suggested creating a new account in which to operate from. So, I thought, well, it can't hurt. So, I created a new user account. Went through the education access approval process (again), and went to lab license. This time, it gave me the option to 'activate class'. This I had not seen before. So, I am guessing my old user (even though it was educational and setup exactly the same as my new user) had old permissions attached to it. It's a user I have been using for several years now. Probably through Autodesk changing how they deal with access to educational software.

I went through the process of creating a group, adding my students, and assigning a product to them. I could do this because Autodesk now had given me access to 125 'assignments' for each product. THANK GOODNESS!

So, if you're reading this, and having issues with the educational access. Maybe creating a new user is the key to making it all work.

Thank you all for reading! 🙂

Hi @casey.mynott,

Thanks for letting us know how you fixed this issue. It shouldn't be this way and I'll let Autodesk know so this can be fixed.
