I'm posting this so that it may save others some time and frustration.
Last week we had several workstations that could no longer open models in Revit 2017. Revit started fine, but when opening any model, Revit would crash.
After some investigation I determined that the common factor with the affected workstations was that they all had a FAILED attempted installation of the Windows Update for .NET Framework KB4041083. Repeated attempts to install this update continued to fail.
The eventual resolution was:
Download the standalone installer for .NET Framework 4.7 from Microsoft.
Run the installer, choosing to Reinstall/Repair
Reboot
After this, the KB4041083 Update installed successfully and Revit no longer crashed when opening a model file.
