New Autodesk Licensing 2026?

Hi everyone,

I recently received an email from Autodesk stating that, starting in March 2026, the network serial number method for licensing will be discontinued.

We are a university in Germany with approximately 100 PCs, which we update annually. During this process, I register the Autodesk serial number on one PC and then clone that setup across all the others. As a result, all the machines are licensed using the same serial number provided through Autodesk’s education program.

From the email, I understand that this system will be replaced with a Named User model. However, our current licenses are valid until May 2, 2026—which is after the March cutoff. This makes me wonder: is "network licensing" different from simply using a serial number for multiple installations?

Additionally, I’m concerned about what this transition means in practice. Will I need to create a Named User account for each student at our university? That seems quite complex and potentially unmanageable.

I’d really appreciate it if anyone could clarify these points or share how they’re planning to handle this change.

Thank you!

Looks like the educational license is moving to 'named licenses' as well? That indeed means you have to create an Autodesk account for each student. You know, 'to simplify' things.

What's shown if you click the 'Update today' button?
