I have an active subscription to LT.  I purchased it in 2016 and renewed it this year. I received by email a file in 2017 AutoCAD Mechanical.  When I attempted to open it, A box opened asking for the name of the license server or the license file.  Neither I or the person who sent it know what that might be.  How can I open the file?

Somewhere on your network someone installed Flex LM you need to find who installed it and where

what file did you exactly receive? did it have a .lic extention?

The file has a normal .dwg extension, with nothing visible following.

I have asked the sender to consult with the IT dept. about the Flex LM. Unfortunately, the plant is in France and no one is there right now. I hope to get an answer tomorrow.

Did you contact your IT Person? When you double-click the DWG file it attempts to open AutoCAD. Your instance of AutoCAD is a Network version which mean you'll need to know the name of the server hosting your license file.

In addition, you may need to configure the timeout variable since your server is in France. Here's how to create that variable:

  1. Right-Click Computer and choose Properties
  2. Click Advanced System Settings from the left side of the dialog
  3. On the Advanced tab of your System Settings dialog, click Environment Variables...
  4. Under System Variables... Create a new variable with the following information:
    • Name: FLEXLM_TIMEOUT
    • Value: 1000000
  5. Click OK

Thanks,

Darin

Hello Darin,

Sorry but I could not try to follow your advice. Friday was a holiday in France, and I flew to China on Sat.

Today, Tuesday, I am in Tianjin, PRC. The engineer from France who sent me the files is coming here today, and he can send an email to his plant in France about the server file name.

I was unable to find a COMPUTER tab to right click to get to PROPERTIES.

An engineer who works here has the full 2018 Mechanical AutoCAD (as opposed to my 2016 subscription), and he was able to open the file no problem. He saved it as DXF on his computer and emailed the file to me. Same problem.

I was wondering if instead of renewing my 2016 subscription, I should have let it lapse and got a new subscription to LT 2017nor 2018.

Thanks,

I'm a little confused by your issue.  LT is not a network based software unless you purchase a large quantity from Autodesk or you are  a "big" Autodesk customer.   Is that your case?  Large customer and/or order a large quantity?

What happens if you open a drawing that you created or you started a new drawing?  Do you get the same message?  If not, then you really need to share the message that you're seeing.

In addition opening a true Autodesk Mechanical 2017 file (meaning entities created with Mechanical functions) in your version of LT should issue you a proxy issue warning (since LT doesn't have the ability to modify these entities).

If you continue to pay your subscription you are entitled to the current release and 3 legacy versions.  Do you know if its still active?

I am a retired former employee of Daramic LLC working as a consultant. Daramic is a worldwide manufacturing company, probably a medium sized customer. I work alone from home, so I am not.

I have been sharing drawings with my colleagues, Daramic engineers for the last three years with no issue. This suddenly cropped up when a colleague from France sent me some files in Mechanical 2017. I have an annual subscription to LT 2016, fairly recently renewed. I thought that renewing the subscription would keep me current enough to open files. Maybe not.

You have to understand that AutoCAD Mechnical is a vertical product of AutoCAD.  It has features that AutoCAD or LT doesn't have.  So depending on how the drawing was created and save, you would get proxy warnings in your LT drawing.  Not saying you can't open it, it just means you can't edit the information that was created by AutoCAD Mechanical.

What about the other questions I've asked?  Or showing the message that you are seeing?

I have never had a problem opening a drawing I made. I was using a legacy version of LT 2011, but it became too common for me to be unable to open a drawing that was from a newer version. I would get a message like: "File could not be open, because it was created in a newer version." I would need to contact the send to save it as an older version. The I obtained the subscription to LT 2016, which, as I said, I renewed fairly recently.

This is something new, When I tried to open the drawing, immediately got a message that the raster was being updated. The appeared to happen OK. Then the program started and the file began to open, but stopped and I got a message that I needed the server file or file name. When I could enter that, the program shut down. I should be able to get that tomorrow, although our U.S. IT dept. doesn't support AutoCAD, so the people in France might not know.

Thank you for trying to help me.
