Network licensing - can a license server be cloud based?

I apologize if this has been answered already, I did search for this topic but was not finding anything definitive.

My very basic question is, can a Network License server be cloud based?  Are there existing KB articles on this?

We added some network licenses last year.  Due to the recent Pandemic events, our users have been working from home primarily like everyone else.  Currently they are having to use a VPN connection solely to access our AutoDesk licensing server to pull a network license for AutoCad and Revit.  We use OneDrive and SharePoint as our file shares so this VPN connection, which can be spotty, solely for the AutoDesk lic is not ideal.  Are we doing this the hard way?  Are there alternatives?  Thanks!  - JH

you can run the license manager on the cloud 

you have to make sure these things are done

If you run them off-premises, be sure that:

• Hosted software is properly secured by your third-party cloud provider.
• You can control access to and use of the remotely hosted software.

Important: Autodesk doesn't provide technical support for your chosen virtualization software.

you also need to make sure the MAC address is static
