Infamous 1603 Error: Revit 2018 Install Fail

Hello everyone,

Another infamous Revit 2018 install failure here, our typical 1603 is back.

I've had enough of these to know the do the following:

- Uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) - 14.0.242.10

- Uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) - 14.0.242.10

- Run Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

This time though, even after doing the above I was still getting 1603 / 1619 errors

So after digging through the forums, I did the following:

- Uninstall everything (AutoCAD, A360, Desktop Application...)

- Removed all folders AutoDesk related from:

-- C > Autodesk

-- C > Program Files > Autodesk

-- C > Program Files (x86) > Autodesk

-- C > Temp > Autodesk stuff

- Ensured the Temp folder existed but empty

Still getting 1603 errors, so I did a Virtual Agent install.

This time it 'installed', but when I tried to open the application it would crash.

When I sent the crash report, it asked me to install the hotfix.

After installing the hotfix, Revit would still crash.

Now some notable points about the Virtual Agent install.

- It installed Revit 2018.1 (never saw the .1 before)

- I noticed it also installed Dynamo when I was looking at the prompts (cool! I didn't ask for it but was going to do it after)

- I saw the Virtual Agent gave me Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

-- I downloaded all parts, and ran Part 1, and it looked it Revit 'installed' everything. (therefore did not run Part 2 and 3)

Questions Moving Forward:

1. Do I need to run Part 2 and Part 3 of the Virtual Agent install, even though Revit is 'installed' after Part 1

2. Do I need to uninstall everything again, and run a 'normal' install so you guys get the logs?

3. Worst case scenario, I would rather not flash my computer and do a complete reinstall of everything.

The software works great when it's first install! After that, well, upgrading has been a headache.

Looking forward to something, thanks for the work.

There are still a bunch of VB failed entries in the Revit 2018 setup log. You need to take care of them.

As for the Virtual Agent question, you only need to run the first file as long as all files have been downloaded completely.

Thanks for the response.

Do you know what else I'm missing?

A Ctrl+F search for 'Fail' only shows me the failure to install the Redistributable and the .Net Framework.

Should be be searching for anything in particular?

Also, any links that could point me to the correct steps to fix my install?

Thanks.

In the past I had to search for any Failed Microsoft Visual C++ entries in the log, Uninstall them, search for the packages on Microsoft website to download and Reinstall, one by one.  There were more than just the two you listed above.

The one below indicating your installation file was not downloaded completely.  Since you already tried Virtual Agent so how about download it through your account?

@BILLARDARCHITECTURE

Your installation is failing on updating netframe 4.6.2.  Please review this article.  If that doesn't help after you do the installation again, most likely you will have to modify the installation setup.ini file.

@ToanDN the download failure was an earlier attempt..  Smiley Wink

Hello, thanks for the reply.

Still having issues.

TLDR, not sure how to start SETUP.EXE after I changed the SETUP.INI as it fails to a 'Communication Error'

-----

- Uninstalled all presence of AutoDesk with

-- the Uninstall utility in the AutoDesk folder,

-- manual delete of files in folders, and

-- double checked by using the Microsoft Install and Uninstall application.

- Install failed, but logs show that the Redistributable SUCCEEDED (good news)

-- So only the Runtime 4.6.2 was failing

- Checked that IGNORE_FAILURE=YES for all found values in SETUP.INI in C > Revit_2018_G1_Win_64bit_wi_en-US

- Removed all strings between DOTNET Begin and DOTNET End as per https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-licensing/install-net-framework-language-pack-failed-ins...

When I start SETUP.EXE after saving the changes to SETUP.INI, it fails to a Communication Error

If I do a browser install, it replaces all the files in the folder including the SETUP.INI and reverts my changes

So how do I start the SETUP.EXE after changes to the SETUP.INI

Thanks

@BILLARDARCHITECTURE

At the end of the log it looked like you had downloaded the actual media to your machine, perhaps not.  You can't change the installation setup.ini for the Autodesk media you never downloaded to your machine.  You are still trying to use the web installer which tries to install software from the Autodesk servers.

Follow these steps:

Download and install per:

1.  Clean out your personal temp (%temp%) folder.  Make sure you have full admin rights, set Windows UAC to never notify and if possible disable your Anti-Virus/Malware scanning utilities. Also the download should occur over a hard wired connection to the Internet and not over WIFI.

2. Access the Autodesk Virtual Agent and follow the download links to your product.

3. Download all of the parts (some applications only have a single part to download) for your product first. This means save each part to your hard drive.  Do not continue until all of the parts have fully downloaded.
4. Navigate to your download folder location and extract (double click) part _001_00X.sfx.exe (or the single file download).
5. In a few seconds the extraction will start and prompt you to extract to C:\Autodesk.
6. Once the extraction is finished, the installation will automatically start.
7. Follow the installation steps for your product.  At this point you could cancel the installation or create a deployment.

However if the installation does fail using this method, please post your installation log file here so we can review it.

Posting info: Sometimes the installation log file contains the serial # that was assigned to you.  Open your log file using Windows Notepad and perform a search on "/SN".  Depending on the number of installation attempts, your serial # may be located throughout the log file.  If present, remove or "X" out your serial # prior to posting.

Good luck on your installation and report back on your progress.

Hello,

Since I did the Virtual Agent install yesterday but Revit 2018.1 kept crashing on startup, I decided to try again using the browser install and try the Setup.INI changes suggested.

If you're telling me to try the VA install again, I'll give it a go.

Updates (probably) within the hour.

RESOLVED

So the Virtual Agent install DID work this time for Revit 2018, even without installing the hotfix.

I'm guessing I didn't go deep enough on my previous 'clean' install.

For others, and myself in the future, let me tell you a story:

  1. Start > Autodesk (Folder) > Uninstall application
    1. Run the application, uninstall all Autodesk applications
  2. Control Panel > Uninstall Programs
    1. Uninstall all remaining Autodesk applications starting with (AutoCAD, Revit, respective additions such as content libraries, Autodesk Desktop, Dynamo, IronPython, others... etc.)
    2. Uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) - 14.0.24210 (at time of posting)
    3. Uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) - 14.0.24210 (at time of posting)
  3. Run the Microsoft .Net Framework Repair Tool (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135)
  4. 3rd Party Uninstaller (Wise Program Installer) (http://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-program-uninstaller.html)
    1. Uninstall all remaining Autodesk applications (if they exist, including license manager... etc.)
  5. Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall utility 'FixIt' (https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed...)
    1. Next
    2. Uninstall
    3. Select Autodesk applications if remaining
    4. Follow prompts to uninstall
    5. Repeat until all applications are uninstalled
  6. Manually remove Autodesk folders from the following locations
    1. C > Autodesk
    2. C > Program Files > Autodesk
    3. C > Program Files (x86) > Autodesk
    4. C > Program Files > IronPython 2.7 (this is for Dynamo)
    5. C > Temp > All files in temp
      1. If there is no Temp, create one
    6. C > ProgramData > Autodesk (If you can't see it, go to the window 'View' tab and check 'Hidden Items'
    7. C > ProgramData > RevitInterProcess (If you can't see it, go to the window 'View' tab and check 'Hidden Items'
    8. C > Users (go through every user) > AppData (same as above, may be in 'Hidden Items') >
      1. Local > Autodesk
      2. Local > Temp > All files in temp
        1. If there is no Temp, create one
      3. Roaming > Autodesk
    9. %Temp% > All files in temp folder (you can get here by entering %temp% in the address bar of the window directory
  7. Repeat 1-6 to ensure you got it all
  8. Disable UAC
    1. Start > Change User Account Control Settings > Set to lowest setting (nothing)
  9. Disable Antivirus (I actually didn't do this, but this is what Autodesk recommends)
  10. Restart computer (just to be safe)
  11. Download your application from the Autodesk Virtual Agent (http://autodesk.creativevirtual15.com/autodesk/bot.html?isJSEnabled=1&businessArea=Root.Front%20Desk...)
    1. Enter 'Install'
    2. Click 'Software Download Links'
    3. Click 'Revit Products'
    4. Click 'Revit'
    5. Download ALL parts (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) (parts should be kept together in same folder)
  12. Run Part 1 (Revit_2018_G1_Win_64bit_dlm_001_003.sfx) and this should install everything, no need to run part 2 and 3
  13. Pray

If everything works, it should run after you click on Launch on the install complete screen.

It may look like it's stuck on a splash screen, but if you have a dual monitor setup like me and are reading this, the product activation pop-up may be hiding behind the browser window.

Enter your SN and everything should work.

If Revit crashes on start up, your 'clean' install was probably not clean, but there is still hope.

Submit the crash report, and it should bring you to a page with a hotfix.

Download the hotfix and it should install itself.

Restart your computer (just to be safe) and try running Revit.

If this fails the first time, then try again. Sometimes it crashes on the first run.

If this fails the second time, then do it all again and make sure your computer is truly clean from any Autodesk applications / related programs.

If this fails again, then it's time to start a thread on the forums, post the logs, and buy a beer.

If it works, it's time to buy a beer.

Story end.

Thanks for everyone who helped, much appreciated.

i tried all that ! uninstalled C++, installed them manually , repaired .net framework but nothing seems to work for me. I'm sure there is a solution somewhere out there. I have been on this from last two days and I couldn't find one yet!
