@benfishr Happy to help!
So there are a few things going on here so let me clarify a few things first:
1. You will never loose your data. No matter what happens with your license, the very lowest level that you can get to on your account is called a “basic license” this is basically where you have no normal license on your account and you will not be able to edit any of your Fusion files, but you will still have access to your account and you will still be able to get to your data. So don’t worry about that!
2. Whatever license you get is assigned to your account. Your account can change between different license types (educational, hobbyist, commercial) but will always remain the same account with all of your data.
3. All licenses require a yearly renewal.
For education users, this means re-verifying your education status by going to the “get products” page of the Autodesk Education website.
for hobbyist licenses you need to renew by going to the “personal use” homepage.
How to do these is explained in this article.
So with that information, your next steps are probably as follows:
1. Figure out what license you can get. If you are an educator or student at an accredited educational institution, I would recommend getting this one as it is fully featured. If not, get the Personal Use License (aka hobbyist).
2. Apply for that license.
3. Check if it worked. Whilst switching between licenses is possible, it typically requires the support team to change some backend settings. As such, if you change licenses types now, it may not work. Once applying for license, you should get an email telling you that you have been given a license. Log out of Fusion, close it, reopen and login again. If it hasn’t worked and you still have no license applied, you will need to contact education support directly and ask them to switch your account type to whichever license you applied for. You can reach them here.
Let us know how it goes or if you have any further questions and I will be very happy to help out!
