Can't activate autocad: keep getting script error

I know this is a known problem, but I've tried all known solutions on the forum and can't get it to work. I installed AutoCAD 2021 and want to activate. But when I get to the activation stage, the window keeps popping up a script error:

Pardon the French but as you can see it is not the regular script error that fails on a local script. This is a remote script. After this failure there are others but I think the first failure is the reason for the subsequent ones. I've tried:

  • Starting autocad without the language code in the desktop shortcut
  • Resetting internet explorer (which seems to be the source browser that is used in the background) to its defaults
  • Changing all kinds of compatibility policies in internet explorer when using intranet sites
  • Removing the 'new Edge browser' all together
  • Setting internet explorer as my default browser
  • Clicking 'yes' when it asks if I want to continue executing script and then waiting for a long time
  • Starting acad.exe as an administrator
  • All kinds of combinations of the above

None worked: I keep getting the friggin screen. There must be some simple solution right?

Hi @Anonymous

Have you seen the following AKN article about this:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Script-error-when-starting-AutoCAD-or-AutoCAD-LT-2017-2018-and-2019.html

Hi @mdavis22569 yes I have, and tried all of that. As you can see in the address of the script, my script is downloaded from the internet and the script in the article you're referring to is a local (look at the 'file://' prefix) script. The script from the article is referring to a missing language variable, my error is not that. In fact, I don't really get a specific error, just 'something went wrong' (or something along those lines).

Do this if logging into your PC/Laptop as an all new user with Admin rights does not resolve it https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Recommen...

I Do have the exact same error followed by another five-ish script erorrs on different URLs. I tried several devices, even a clean installed windows 10 20H2 one with only a local admin account on it tried with afreschly downloaded AutoCad2021 from the autdesk website. Also tried the complete knowledge base sugestions, nothing helps.

I haven't tried loggin in as a fresh user yet. Will do that first. I have to say this seems like an error in the script that is downloaded. I doubt doing a fresh installation will fix it, especially since @Anonymous said the has the same problem with several devices.

OK, creating a brand-new admin user and logging in as that user fixed it for me. I still got some script errors and timeouts but after a couple of tries, the activation worked. I have to say this process and the tech behind it could use a bit of improvement.

I don't think is was the new account that fixed it. I did retry now with the an account and same installation as the one before giving me the error. After the first script error I now was asked to log in, which was new. Half-way typing my login a new script error poped-up, but nevertheless I could continue an activate the product. So it seems to me they have changed something to the online activation-scripts which kind of fixed the issue.

It went exactly the same for me. A lot of script errors and weird hoops to jump through, but in the end, it activated.
