C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VCOMP140.DLL error message

Recently Windows did one of its automatic updates. Ever since I can no longer run AutoCAD. I get the error message “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VCOMP140.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator software vendor for support. Error status 0xc000012f.” I did a clean uninstall and downloaded a new copy using the Autodesk Virtual Agent, but I still get the same error message. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Hello esthervogelstein

It looks like you’re receiving an error: "Contact your administrator to request permission to use this product". This error occurs due to not have permissions assigned. The following articles should help you resolve the problem:

First did you realized that you responded to an auto-bot..  Smiley Very Happy

Secondly...  Not sure why you are posting multiple times.  This leads to confusion and pulling you in different direction.

Finally...  This message usually means something is wrong with your operating system.   You indicated there was a windows update?  Can you roll it back?

I didn't mean to post the same thing twice. Sorry about that, I'm a Newbie!I figured that it was a Windows problem since it started right after a Windows update. I contacted Microsoft Technical Support. They had me try various things and finally decided that we should reinstall Windows from scratch. Unfortunately that didn't solve the problem. In addition I now can't reset Windows to a previous configuration!I really don't understand what the problem might be though since I now have a clean installation of the latest version of both Windows and AutoCAD!Do you have any other suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated!

Now some of these steps may be a repeat but lets start there and see what happens.

1.  Make sure your Windows account has full admin/pc rights.

2.  Set your UAC (Windows User Access Control) to not notify.

3.  IF possible disable your Anti-Virus and Malware Scanning Utilities.

4.  Exit all applications except the operating system

5.  Perform a clean uninstall per these instructions.  Make sure you use the Microsoft Fixit as indicated in that article.  Also if you have Autodesk Application that are running without issues than you need to adjust locations so you don't end up destroying them..

6.  Perform only steps 1 and 2 in this article.  Do not reinstall them as indicated in steps 3.

7.  Delete as many files and folders location in your personal (%temp%) folder.   This location is C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\Local\Temp and Appdata is a hidden folder (so you may need to adjust your viewing settings).

8.  Follow these steps to download and install your Autodesk application.

Download and install per:

1. Access the Autodesk Virtual Agent and follow the download links to your product.
2. Download all of the parts (some applications only have a single part to download) for your product first. Do not continue until all of the parts have fully downloaded.
3. Navigate to your download folder location and extract (double click) part _001_00X.sfx.exe (or the single file download).
4. In a few seconds the extraction will start and prompt you to extract to C:\Autodesk.
5. Once the extraction is finished, the installation will automatically start.
6. Follow the installation steps for your product

If you want the full recommended installation steps, click on the installation link in my signature.

However if the installation does fail using this method, please post your installation log file here so we can review it.  Posting info: Sometimes installation log files contain personal information such as your serial #.  Prior to posting your log file please make sure to remove such info.

Good luck and report back on your progress.

Thank you very much; it worked!I have just one more question: I downloaded the 64-bit version which has two parts. The instructions tell you to download both parts but then tells you only to run the first part. That doesn't seem to make sense. Should I be running the second part as well?

Thanks a million, Mr. Lancaster. I had the same exact issue with my AutoCAD 2018 after installing a recent update from Microsoft on Windows 10. Followed your above well written direction and got everything to work once again. I had to call Support desk though, to get a product key, as I was not given a product key at the time of initial installation(I was given an activation code, instead).

Just wanted to state too that Microsoft Fit it(or whatever the latest name is), did not find any issues to fix in my system.

Cheers
