Backburner IPV6 Version

Hi,

Our office network as switched to IPV6 recently.

Backburner seems to not support that kind of network

"3ds Max backburner Error sending on UDP to "IPD adress": An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used (0x273f)"

Most of the help I can find online recommend to disable IPv6 and revert back to IPv4. This is unfortunatly not a viable solution. My office is and will stick with IPv6 from now on.

Is there a version of Backburner that supports IPv6 network?

Thank you

Spec: Windows 7 64bits - 3Ds max Design 2014 - Backburner 2014

There is no version of Backburner that is IPv6. I also don't agree with disabling IPv6.

What you should do is use Microsoft's "Prefer IPv4 over IPv6" Fix-it which you can find here (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2533454)

This has to be done on all computers on the render farm.

Try it out and tell me if that works.

Just pushed out this setting over GPO. Seems to work in the test environment.

Incase others need to do this, here's How:

  1. Create new GPO object
  2. Drill into Computer Config > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry
  3. Create a new registry item with:
    - Action: Update
    - Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    - Key Path: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters
    - Value Name: DisabledComponents
    - Value Type: REG_DWORD
    - Value Data: 20 (Base: Hex)
  4. Link GPO in OUs where your render nodes & workstations reside.

That's basically it.

Strongly recommend against disabling IPv6. Lots of things in windows rely on having the loopback interface working properly and just killing IPv6 altogether may cause all sorts of interesting problems a few months down the line.

Hi Ben,

I am using 3dsmax 2017 trial on 2 of my pc and trying out network render for them.

My OS is Windows 7.

I tried Microsoft's "Prefer IPv4 over IPv6" Fix-it as you mentioned, it fixes the network render on the local machine but it does not link them up in the network render as I can only see 1 PC in my Backburner Manager.

On the PC that does not appear in the Manager, its server window is still showing error messages of "Error receiving information: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x2746) ."

Hope you can advise on this.

Best Regards,

Sunny

Did you restart? You must restart to apply the "fix it".

To verify it's worked, check the registry settings in my post above and make sure the values exist as described.

If that doesn't work, close all instances of 3ds max / backburner, then delete the "Backburner" folder from %AppData%\..\Local which will reset all preferences.

Hi breakaway9000,

My 2nd PC backburner server is still not connecting to the main PC backburner, this is what i did:

I restarted my 2 machines after the "Prefer IPv4 over IPv6" Fix-it and i checked my registry and without changing anything my registry matches I did what you mentioned under item 2 and 3, as for creating GPO and linking it under item 1 and 4, I could not find a way to do it.

  1. Create new GPO object
  2. Drill into Computer Config > Preferences > Windows Settings > Registry
  3. Create a new registry item with:
    - Action: Update
    - Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    - Key Path: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\TCPIP6\Parameters
    - Value Name: DisabledComponents
    - Value Type: REG_DWORD
    - Value Data: 20 (Base: Hex)
  4. Link GPO in OUs where your render nodes & workstations reside.

FYI, both my machines are connected to a router via an ethernet cable.

Please advise if I still need to do the GPO thingy and if I need to do anything else.

Hi,

Those 4 steps are for people who have active directory domains with hundreds of render nodes... I'm guessing you don't.

I'm not sure what to try now... asides from disabling IPv6 completely just for testing.

Try this on all 3 of your computers:

  1. Make sure backburner and all other apps are closed.
  2. Right click on the network icon on the bottom right of your screen near the time and open the Network & Sharing Center
  3. Under "View your active networks" click on your network adapter (Normally this is called "Local Area Connection" or similar.
  4. Click on "Properties"
  5. Scroll down in the middle of this window and untick the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
  6. Click "OK" then "Close"
  7. Restart the computer

Try that and see if it connects.

Disabling IPv6 is not a good long term fix but we will try it here as a diagnostic step.

Hi,

I have tried the mentioned steps and also make sure my firewall allows the backburner and 3ds max to run and antivirus turned off but it's still not working.

Wondering if its a router setting or something else?

No, it is not a router setting. All the traffic on your local LAN from computer to computer goes direct to each other, has nothing to do with the router.

Can you verify you can ping both ways from the node to the bb server and vice versa?

I found the answer!

"In the Server app on the problem computer, under Edit->General Settings, under Subnet Mask, the box for "Automatic Search" was unchecked."

Sharing the link there:
