AutoCAD 2017 Has Broken Everything

I'm on a Windows 7 64-bit. I had AutoCAD 2016 installed and working fine. The AutoDesk updater app popped up and asked if I wanted to install AutoCAD 2017. Sure I thought, I'll check it out.

Immediately after 2017 was installed BOTH installations were then broken - both apps would immediately crash on start up. So that isn't a good look for AutoDesk to start with, but whatever.

I uninstalled 2017, 2016 is still broken.

I uninstalled 2016.

I tried to re-install 2016, but it won't install. During the install Iget several of these:

"A newer version of this application is already installed on this computer. If you wish to install this version, please uninstall the nerwer version first. Click OK to exit the wizard."

The final installer dialog says everything except the BIM 360 add-in failed to install and I'm left with the same APPCRASH I had originally after installing 2017

To say I'm less than impressed is an understatement. How do I get back to a working install?

Download the software from the Autodesk Virtual Agent

Once there, use the Download Links option to navigate to the application you need to download.

NOTE: If there are multiple parts for the download, you'll need to click each part to download them, one they are downloaded double-click Part1 (which will automatically extract the remaining parts) to begin the installation.

The standalone install doesn't help. It all looks like its working but I still get the 'earlier version' messages and I still end up with this:

It sounds like you have stuff left over...  Did you perform a clean uninstall per this article and then use Microsoft Fixit (link in my signature) to remove any left over items related to Autodesk products.

Hi Kyudos, 

Sorry that you're running into trouble. For the isntall i would suggest a clean uninstall (https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/installation-activation-licensing/get-ready/remove-p...) and then re-install from that 2016 full installer you have downloaded.  

In regards to the app crash, if the 2017 install caused 2016 to crash. My suspicion is that the 2017 installer likely updated a windows component such as microsoft.net frame work or visual c++ or direct X, that in turn may be causing an incompatibility with the video driver. There are two options That should get you working if the first doesn't work please try the second.

Option 1: Update your video driver to the latest version available from your video card manufacturer. Typically you can find this on the video card manufacture's website such as www.nvidia.com 

Options 2: Roll back the changes to your system. If option 1 didn't help or there are no newer drivers available try using the windows restore option to revert your windows to a restore point prior to the AutoCAD 2017 install. This should also reverse any of the windows component updates that were done as part of the install. 

1. From the Start menu, type: Restore in the Search programs and files dialog box.
2. From the list of results, click System Restore.
3. In the System Restore window, click Next.
4. From the list of restore points, select the Date and Time you wish to restore from.

So it seems that may have been the culprit. I was using AutoCAD's uninstaller.

I uninstalled using the Windows system and removed the left over directories.

The 2016 install now works...I think I'll just avoid 2017 for now (I'm developing for 2016).

The question remains though - why provide an uninstaller if it doesn't work and you don't recommend using it?

Typically the Autodesk uninstall utility works just as well as the windows uninstaller and adds the additional functionality of letting to uninstall multiple Autodesk products at once. Clearly something didn't work in this case which is why the manual removal of files was needed. Let us know if you encounter anything else strange and we'll be happy to help.
