api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing - AutoCAD 2017

Problem:  After successful installation of AutoCAD 2017 on my Windows 8.1 x64 system, I received this error on launch:

The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

acad.exe - System Error

This error did not appear on any of my Windows 7 x64 machines thus far.  I have not tested this on Windows 10 yet.

Reason:  From what I can tell, this is caused by the usage of the new Universal CRT | Visual C++ Redistributable that is part of Windows 10.  The good news is that it seems that the installation failures for not having C++ Redistributable installed might be resolved.  The bad news is, if the prerequisite does still fail and the program does install, it will not launch.

Possible Solution:  Here are some steps to take to try and resolve this issue:

Method 1:  This is the easy method.  Follow these steps if you receive the above error.  If it still fails, go to Method 2.

1.  Go to Windows Update and make sure that your computer is fully updated.  The Universal CRT should be delivered by this method.

2.  If not, manually download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for your version of Windows (likely x64)

For Windows x64:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/3/F/93FCF1E7-E6A4-478B-96E7-D4B285925B00/vc_redist.x64.exe

For Windows x86:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/3/F/93FCF1E7-E6A4-478B-96E7-D4B285925B00/vc_redist.x86.exe

3.  You might have to choose uninstall first before you can install the above downloads because of previous failed installs.

4.  Reboot then try to launch AutoCAD 2017 again.

Method 2:  If the above did not work, then here is my advanced solution.  The Universal CRT files are part of the Windows 10 SDK kit.  Installing this kit and placing the CRT DLL files into the AutoCAD 2017 folder seems to resolve the issue.

1.  Download and install the Windows 10 SDK kit:

https://dev.windows.com/en-us/downloads/windows-10-sdk

2.  Copy the entire set of DLLs from the resulting location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Redist\ucrt\DLLs\x64

3.  Paste the files into the location where AutoCAD 2017 is installed:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2017

4.  Launch AutoCAD 2017 to complete the installation and licensing of the product.

Conclusion:  This is a very early and crude fix for this odd issue and I am only providing it as a work-around until I can find a more stable solution to post on the board.  I do not expect this to be an issue on Windows 10.

If anyone has anything else to add, please feel free to share.

Good Luck!

api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. we all windows users know very well it is very important file for the Windows operating system. We use to extract different sources for Third party applications like we connect it with C++ . Missing that file means programs running not successfully it won’t file required file. There are multiple ways to get the solution of this problem. 1- Reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages 2- Updating your Windows 3- Running System File Checker.

Yo people.

Got it to work finally but i ran into a lot of other problems along the way so I'll explain them here also. I have windows 7

So at least for me I had to get the missing .dll file, i had to have SP 1 installed and i had to have my Microsoft visual c++ 2015 repaired. AND I HAD PROBLEMS WITH ALL OF THESE THINGS!?!!?! 😄

So here is how i went down the road just read and figure out what steps you have to do:

1:

I was getting the .dll file missing error so i went here : https://www.dll-files.com/

Just search for the file and move it to the right folder. Scroll down the site for further information on what folder depending if you have a x86 or x64 system.

This might be all you need to do but if not:

2:

Once i did this, the error was gone but now launching AUTOCAD i  got another error. Something about the procedure entry point.

Well i traced this back to having to do with the Microsoft visual c++ 2015. So i went to control panel and then programs, clicked Microsoft visual c++ 2015 and chose repair. Well it wasn't able to repair it and gave me some kind of error, cant remember what but it didn't repair.

(BTW i also deleted all the other older versions of Microsoft visual c++ , don't know if it helped but i did)

Now if you got win 7 with sp 1 installed you might be able to repair it or you might not even get this section 2 error. I thought i had sp 1 installed but i didn't so now to the next problem.

3:

I downloaded the SP 1 file from Microsoft website but once i ran it at some point it just told me that the installation was failed.

So from here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15090/windows-7-install-service-pack-1-sp1 (scroll down) i was able to download the System Update Readiness Tool. After i ran that file i was able to install SP1 and could now repair Microsoft visual c++ 2015

SO FOR ME THE ROUTE WAS ------>DOWNLOAD MISSING DLL FILE-------->INSTALL THE SYSTEM UPDATE READINESS TOOL---------> INSTALL SP 1-------------------> REPAIR Microsoft visual c++ 2015-------->OPEN AUTOCAD ELECTRICAL 2017 AND REALIZE IT WORKS!

. Hopefully this could help somebody out there cuz all of this was a pain to puzzle through..... 😄

Hello @Anonymous,

What operating system are you trying to run this on? Where did you locate your download?

Please be sure to review the system requirements  for AutoCAD 2017. You may have had a corrupted installation of these files.

You can try to conduct a Clean Uninstall, reinstall & use the Browser Download Method in your Autodesk Account

Or you can try the following suggestions above also outlined here regardless of the OS being a 32bit, these redistributables need to be installed but only the x86 apply to 32bit systems.

Please “Accept As Solution” if a reply or replies have helped resolve the issue or answered your question, to help others in the community.

api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is an important part of Windows OS. It is required to run windows programs. If you're facing this problem, then it means the file is missing.

You can fix this issue by updating your windows or by preparing Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable.
