3ds Max 2017 gets stuck on initializing

I am having a problem with Windows 7 Pro. I have re-installed and fixed the NET framework, but still it just disappears after the intializing screen. I have not been able to get past this to register. I had this working fine on my old computer, but this new one has this problem and I cant find anything to fix it.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

I've moved your post to a new thread so I can address you personally.   This is strange behavior for W7.  There is an issue with W10 and the AU update I've seen cause this but in the case of W7 there may be problems with your C++ libraries or .Net installation.  I would try this link and see if it repairs your C++ libraries.  You can use this link to repair your .Net installation as well, but I'm not sure if it's the same link you already used.

The other suggestions would be to possibly post your event viewer logs so I can see if there is anything else causing an issue.  In many cases it's a bad block on the hard drive that may cause this.  Last but not least, let's try running 3ds Max as admin in the case that your security settings are blocking needed assemblies.  Thank you for trying those things.  If they fail, I'll check out your logs and see what might be at the heart of this issue for you.

Best Regards,

Thanks for getting back to me. I ran the NET files again without a problem, but I cannot get Windows to update. I have been trying to do this since installing the new computer, but it never finishes. I let it run for 24 Hours once, but no luck.

Just to test it, I downloaded and installed 3DS Max 2016 and it installed and ran without a problem. It seems it is only 2017.

I have attached the Event Files as requested.

Hello @Anonymous,

Yup, I see three relevant errors here, but I think only two matter as you may have already fixed the 3rd.

1)Product: Autodesk 3ds Max 2017 -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action RegisterInventorServerHost, location: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\MaxInventorServerHost.exe, command: /regserver

2 )The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk5\DR5.

3) There was an error with another program and .Net 4.0 runtimes.  (This you may have already fixed as per your first post, I would ignore for now.)

The first one seems like the main one to deal with, and I think just redownloading and reinstalling could help here.  Maybe use the virtual agent just to be sure that you have the packages fully downloaded.  That would be my first move.  The second one may not be the reason why it won't start, but if it lives on Harddisk 5 it may be worth trying to install it on another drive.  Please keep me posted!

I downloaded with Virtual Agent, uninstalled the old install and re-installed again. This time it gets to the enter serial number screen, and when I click enter serial number it crashes and disappears.

I cant understand how 2016 could run, and 2017 not. This was definitely a good install.

Something seems wrong with the app to register it.

Thanks for any help. This one is perplexing!

Hello @Anonymous,

Sorry for the issues you are experiencing with your 3ds Max 2017 software. There are several possible reasons the activation portion of the install crashed.

Please review the following:

- Make sure you have an updated graphics card driver

-  Update your product with the latest service pack

- Make sure you have the Visual C++ installed (C:\Autodesk\Autodesk_3ds_Max_2017_EFGJKPS_Win_64bit_wi_en-US\3rdParty\x64\VCRedist)

the folder will list them by year

Thanks for trying to help.

The software was a new download only yesterday so it should be up to date.

I even reinstalled Windows 7 Pro in case there was a problem there.

C++ libraries are all up to date

Lastest drivers are installed for the graphics card.

I even tried the hotfix you had linked although it seemed to be for 2015 products.

It still gets to the enter serial number screen, and when you click on enter serial number, it goes to "Initializing" and then just disappears. There seems to be some trouble opening the app to register it.

I am running it as an administrator.

Found the problems and fixed it with help from one of the registration experts. It was buried deep, but resolved immidately with his guidance.

Excellent work!!

Here are the notes I was sent from support. I hope it is OK to post them here:

Thank you for choosing Autodesk Support. I am Davide from the Installation & Licensing Support team and I pulled your case from our forums in order to assist you resolving the issue with 3ds Max 2017.

Please try to follow these steps as a potential solution:

STEP 1: Forcing reactivation of the product

  1. Close any running Autodesk programs.
  2. Remove all files under C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ADUT.
  3. Remove all files under C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ADUT.
  4. Go to C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet and delete all files that start with adskflex.

STEP 2 - Reset the license information

  • Using Windows Explorer, browse to the following folder:
  • C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\CLM\LGS\<Product_Key>_2017.0.0.F
  • If the folder does not exist, create it.
  • Note: The <Product_Key> must match the product that is giving the error. For example, if you get the error with 3ds Max 2017 you need to use product key 128I1. This is true even if you installed from a suite.
  • Delete the LGS.data file, if it exists.

  • Using Notepad (or preferred text editor) create a new text file called LGS.data
  • Add the following text to the text file:
  • _STANDALONE (or _NETWORK if the product uses a network license). The text must be all capital letters.
  • Save the file to the following folder:
  • C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\CLM\LGS\<Product_Key>_2017.0.0.F
  • Launch 3ds Max 2017 - you will need to reactivate it.

Let me know if this solves the problem. Should you require further assistance, do not hesitate to reply to this email. I would be happy to assist.

Best regards

I had a similar problem, had to change "_STANDALONE" to "_USER" in the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\CLM\LGS\<Product_Key>_2017.0.0.F file.
