NOTE: The idea behind this is to create boundaries to define you Model Object. You will need closed polygons, or areas enclosed by lines [curves, etc] for this to work.

To create a SHP or SDF file:

  1. In Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® or Autodesk® AutoCAD® MAP 3D, use MAPEXPORT>output type SHP [ESRI] or SDF
    • [For SHP] Set object Type to line, and choose objects manually [select in the drawing]
  2. In Infraworks, use Data Import, choose SHP/SDF, and select the SHP/SDF file you just created in Civil 3D/MAP 3D.

When Configuring as Buildings:

Common Tab

  • Set Type to Buildings
  • Set Roof Height [slope, etc]
  • Set Style> Rule style to assign building material

When Configuring as Coverage Areas:

Common Tab

  • Set Type to Coverage Areas
  • Set Style> Rule style to assign Coverage material

Source Tab

  • Draping Options> Drape
  • Ensure Convert polylines to polygons is selected

When Configuring as Tree Areas:

Common Tab

  • Set Type to Trees
  • Set Style> Rule style to assign Tree Style

Source Tab

  • Draping Options> Drape
  • Ensure Convert polylines to polygons is selected

NOTE: Tree areas defined by imported shape files will not have the Density Slider [found in Stand of Trees]. You will need to go to the object properties, and manually adjust/update Stylization> Object Spacing and Object Spacing Variance.

When Configuring as Water Areas:

Common Tab

  • Set Type to Water Areas
  • Set Style> Rule style to assign Water Style
  • Water Level, Buffer Width, and Bank Width can also be set

Source Tab

  • Draping Options> Don't Drape [default] as you can assign the water level previous
  • Ensure Convert polylines to polygons is selected

When Configuring as Water Sheds:

Common Tab

  • Set Type to Watersheds
  • Set Style> Rule style to assign Water Style

Source Tab

  • Draping Options> Drape
  • Ensure Convert polylines to polygons is selected
