terrain statistics won't show cut&fill

terrain statistics won't show cut&fill

Created "grading area", tried to use "terrain statistics" to calculate cut & fill, only showed area before pressing "enter" key, after "enter", even the area disappeared.

The grading style is selected, modified to 1.5:1 fill, 1:1 cut.

Cut&fill for road is more intuitive, it shows on the side bar after the road is selected. Why "grading area" is not designed this way?

Hi @Anonymous ,

could you please describe more in detail what you do?

Are you running terrain statistics for the grading area? Or the road (component or planning)?

What happens when?

Regards,

Karsten.

Thank you for your reply.

I created several grading areas and roads, try to figure out the quantity of the cut & full.

I have no problem with the roads, cut & fill is easily to get by clicking the calculator icon.

However, I have problem with the grading areas, by clicking "terrain statistics", then use lines to circle that area, press enter and it seems it was running("calculating terrain statistics" popped up), but nothing appeared on the screen after that.

Hi @Anonymous ,

are your grading areas based on imported data sources?

If yes, the terrain statistics tool won't calculate something, see https://knowledge.autodesk.com/article/Terrain-Statistics-does-not-calculate-grading-for-imported-land-area-in-Infraworks

Edit your grading area a bit and it should work.

Karsten.

The grading areas are from Infraworks Model Builder not from imported data sources.

Hi @Anonymous ,

I'm not aware that the Model Builder model provides "grading area" features.

Could it be that we talk about "coverage areas"?

Is it possible to create a screencast that shows the issue?

Regards,

Karsten.

Hi Karsten:

Please find the link to the screencast:

Hi @Anonymous ,

I tried to recreate the issue on my side, but everything works fine, see https://autode.sk/3Js5u1s

What version of InfraWorks do you use exactly?

Can you test in a different/new model if it works there?

Regards,

Karsten.

Hello,

I am running into the same issue.

1) I have imported a raster to create my model.

2) Created a pad by using "grading area" then specify cut:fill ratios.

3) I can see the topography changing around my pad

4) Running terrain statistics, same issues as described above are encountered.

A message appear indicating calculations are undergoing.

then I get a glimpse of the result (sometimes), before everything disappears.

Hi @Maher-Paul.Hamad ,

how did you create the grading area? Was it imported or sketched?

It could be the behavior mentioned in this article:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/article/Terrain-Statistics-does-not-calculate-grading-for-imported-la...

Can you edit the grading area a bit, for example move it up a bit and then down again?

Regards,

Karsten.

Hello Karsten,

The grading area was sketched; marked on the model using the grading area tool.

I can move it up, down, and side ways as well.

The link you posted is not visible in its entirety and I can't click it.

Hi @Maher-Paul.Hamad ,

can you see the terrain statistics after you moved the area a bit?
This is the link again - there seems to be a display issue in the forum:

Terrain Statistics does not calculate grading for imported land area in Infraworks

Karsten.

Hello,

I was able to access the article you shared, my pads are not an imported land area.

yes, I can move the area but that doesn't solve the issue.

Note:

When I generate a model using Infraworks' database both i) terrain statistic & ii) road component earthwork features work fine.

However, generating a model using imported data leads to issues with terrain statistic only, the road component earth works volume works fine.

It does seem to be an issue with displaying terrain statistics result, is there an alternative way to retrieve cut/fill volumes from terrain statistic calculations?

Thank you,

I have the same problem. the ''terrain statistics'' windows which shows the results after calculation just shows for a millisecond and then disappears or does not show at all in some instances. I have read through most of the articles and seems there is no solution for this problem?

Hi @himeezembikustaa ,

there is a coverage or land area in the screenshot that forms a basin. Is this an imported data source?

If yes, it's an explanation why terrain statistics don't work - imported assets are considered "existing ground" thus no volume is reported.

Regards,

Karsten.

Thanks for the reply @Karsten.Saenger

No, the land area is not imported data and was modeled in infraworks. I just want to calculate total excavation volume.

Sorry for the late reply. Terrain statistics window does not stay long on display in Infraworks 2025. One can only see the results for a mili-second before the window disappears from the screen. This is a really useful tool and does not work.

Hi @himeezembikustaa ,

is it possible to share the InfraWorks model? Please create a zip file of the model.sqlite and model.files folder. I can share a OneDrive folder if needed.

Regards,

Karsten
