Scale Terrain

I have a surface in Civil 3D.  Coord system is UTM Nas83 Zone 10 (sort of, but to get it to true grid, a scale factor must be used).

My infraworks model created by model builder is the same coord system, except it's intrued grid.

I attached my C3D file and imported the surface and I can see it, but of course it's in the wrong place due to the scale factor.  i tried setting the X and Y scales in the data sources panel, but these scales have no effect on the terrain model.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt.

Can you provide a bit more detail? How are you applying the scale factor in Civil 3D?

I tried what you are describing with changing the scale factors in InfraWorks 360 and I'm seeing the same result. The scale factors do not affect the Civil 3D data source. Interestingly, the offsets do but that probably doesn't help you.

In times where I've had coordinate system challenges I've shown the Bing imagery in Civil 3D and moved/rotated/scaled everything to match the imagery prior to attempting to attach it as a data source in InfraWorks 360.

Thanks Eric. I can scale the surface in Civil 3D before import into IW, and that's what I have done, but in the case that Civil 3D is not available that workaround would not be possible.

Thanks for the clarificaiton Matt.  In what form is the surface data? XML? IMX?

The surface I'm dealing with currently is just from survey data.

So, if you were to attach this directly into InfraWorks 360 (without Civil 3D), what file format would you be trying to attach.

Say someone was given an XML or some other sort of terrain data. Speculation right now.

Just tried it with XML and it disables X and Y scaling, but allows Z. I'll see if we can get someone from the product team to chime in about why this restriction is set.

Hi,

Normally you don't need to scale your terrain X and Y because the terrain data usually comes from providers that use correct hardware/software. So, it may be needed if the data is wrong (for some reason.) Normally, your coordinate system and data are consistent with reality, so the scaling is rarely needed. This is different from scaling on Z because many coordinate systems lack Z information or have no explicit informations on units in Z direction. Also, scaling along Z us useful in many ways for visualization.

Thanks,

Valentin Ofshteyn.
