Same computer, different log in, same model library?

Hi,

I have encounted that if you log on to Infraworks on your desktop, as a different user, you will be able to see all models availble to the prior user. Regardless if you have access to the models or not, not a group member.

how come?

Infraworks may just check the cache to see what models are present, not checking permissions, when you log out and in again?

thanks

[EDIT:]

@Anonymous, although the configurable local/network storage folder and/or cache location for cloud models is user based in the registry as HKEY_CURRENT_USER, the SQLite database files don't have user controlled permissions so once an InfraWorks model is stored locally, then everybody can open it locally. If different users have the same folder settings then InfraWorks looks in the folders an shows available models, also from other users.

Models can be downloaded to a configurable download cache folder and/or a chosen (network or local) folder. If these locations are general folders, accessible by other users then yes, you will be able to open them. You could however change these locations (at first application start), to a user specific windows folder. That will make it impossible for another user to open that model, although visible in the Home screen.

Hi John,

thank you for getting back to me.

so it works as I expected, I dont think this will give any issues. it probably comes down to exspectations from the customer.

maybe in the future you would be able to set up worksets (in a nice Revit nomenclature) instead and control the model by defined areas/properties. just thinking out loud...

@Anonymous, when using cloud models you can assign and invite group members to participate in modelling. See this out-of-this-world collaboration project from @Eric_Chappell. This is still a one-at-a-time modelling process though using a locking mechanism for the whole model.

I like your idea about worksets or defined area control so go ahead and put your idea up in the InfraWorks Idea Station!

@John_DeLeeuw, a slight correction to your comment about it being a one-at-a-time approach. This is true of models stored on a network server: only one person may open the model at a time. However, when using the cloud to collaborate, multiple users can open the model (because it's a locally cached version) and can sync their changes to the central cloud model at any time. So, cloud collaboration truly is a multi-user environment.

@Eric_Chappell, I double checked the latest online help for this and this is what it says:

To publish a local model to the Autodesk 360 cloud

Publishing can take a long time depending on the amount of data involved. Large raster or point cloud data sources can slow publishing. During a long publishing operation, the model's tile might appear on InfraWorks 360Home, but it will display as 0 bytes. If a group member tries to download or delete the model before publishing is complete, an error message indicates the model is locked. A model can also be locked during a long download or sync operation. Model locking does not block a group member from synchronizing non-raster-based changes.

I sometimes experience model locks on collaboration projects. This might be then when another contributer is publishing his/her changes to the online model at the exact same time?

@John_DeLeeuw that's a great clarification:  It appears that you can sync any time except when someone else is syncing or publishing. Multiple users can work and make changes simultaneously, but syncing is one-at-a-time.

Thanks!
