HD Video Quality

Hi all,

I am trying to create HD quality videos out of Infraworks. I have done an extensive research and read all the related forums. Thes are the results for a 1min 30s video

  • Uncompressed video: really good quality but 17GB. Too big to handle
  • WMV Option 1 (10500kBit/s, 25 fps, 1920x1080): 150MB, blurry textures and sky
  • WMV Option 2 (20000kBit/s, 25fps, 1920x1080); 200MB, slight improvement, but still blurry textures and sky
  • DV Video Encoder: poor quality
  • MJPEG Compressor: poor quality

I tried using my hi-spec laptop, and an even higher spec desktop pc. Same results.

I have also tried using a 3rd party video editor software (Handbrake) and edit the uncompressed video. Certainly better than WMV but adds the extra time of processing it and videos are slightly larger (250MB)

So, has anyone out there have any advise into how to get HD quality videos straight from Infraworks? I might have missed a setting.

Regards

Javier

Hi Javier,

When I've done this, my configuration has been WMV (10400kBit/s, 24 fps, 1920x1080), and that produces reasonably good quality videos, I'd probably up the resolution.

I hope that helps,

Harry

Hi Javier

I have struggled with the same thing and the best video quality I have been able to achieve is as follows

Encoder: Uncompressed Video

Frame Rate: 25 fps

Use Viewport resolution

As you stated, this makes a very large file that is pretty un-manageable

I then bring the .avi file into windows movie maker and then save it as a .mp4 and the file size drops dramatically and the quality remains.

That's How I get around it.

Good luck

I typically use:

Uncompressed

1920x1080

60fps

Usually get a ~40gb AVI (for a 2min flyover) that I run through Handbrake, encoding as MP4 (H264) getting a 90-110mb file at the end - Takes ~1/2hr to do doth steps on my HP Zbook - with super crisp clear results.
If I want something smaller, eg. a Draft/Sample output or playback of the 'net or network, I'll either change the framerate in the initial capture, or limit the bitrate on the encoding in Handbrake, or even both.

If you're writing out to an encoded format (eg. WMV) then 're-encoding' is slow and you get lower quality results.

Thanks for your reply Harry. Unfortunately, that configuration doesn't work for me. Unsure why.

Thanks for your reply DCPolglase. Unfortunately, Windows Movie Maker has been discontinued and it's not longer available.

Thanks Glenn. That seems to be the best way to produce high quality videos.

To keep it simple, what I typically do for large videos (20-40 gb) created by the storyboard, I will have my Techsmith Camtasia up and running recording full screen capture and I will run the video that was produced by InfraWorks. The video created by Camtasia ends up being 153 mb video but with still high resolution quality.  It works even better if you have a very high resolution monitor, maybe a 4k monitor.

If you want to guarantee the video quality, you can try TunesKit AceMovi. This software supports 4K output.

Hello Javier,

It's clear that you've put a lot of effort into trying to create HD quality videos from Infraworks, and you've encountered some challenges along the way. Achieving the right balance between video quality and file size can be tricky, but there are a few recommendations you can consider to improve your results:

  1. Codec Selection: Instead of WMV or DV, consider using the H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) codec. These codecs offer a good compromise between video quality and file size. You can experiment with different bitrates and settings to find the right balance.

  2. Resolution and Frame Rate: Stick with 1920x1080 resolution, but you may want to experiment with different frame rates. A frame rate of 30fps might offer smoother motion, especially if your video involves a lot of movement.

  3. Bitrate Adjustment: While you've tried different bitrates with WMV, it's essential to find the sweet spot. Sometimes, slightly higher bitrates can significantly improve video quality without drastically increasing file size. Aim for a balance between quality and file size.

  4. Infraworks Settings: Double-check your Infraworks settings. Ensure that you are exporting the highest quality possible from the software itself. Sometimes, there are settings that can affect video quality during the export process.

  5. Post-Processing: If you still can't achieve the desired quality directly from Infraworks, consider exporting your video in the best quality possible (even if it's large) and then using video editing software to compress it to a more manageable size. Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Media Encoder are good options for this purpose. This approach may require additional processing time, but it can yield better results.

  6. Third-party Plugins: Look for third-party plugins or add-ons specifically designed for Infraworks that might offer better video export options.

  7. GPU Acceleration: Ensure that you are utilizing GPU acceleration if your video editing software supports it. This can significantly speed up the video editing and encoding process.

  8. Transcoding: If you've already tried Handbrake, consider experimenting with other video transcoding software. Different tools may produce slightly different results, and you might find one that suits your needs better.

Remember to keep a balance between video quality and file size that aligns with your project requirements. Sometimes, achieving the highest possible quality may require larger file sizes, and you'll need to weigh the trade-offs based on your specific needs.

I hope these suggestions help you improve the quality of your HD videos from Infraworks. Good luck with your video creation, and I hope you find the optimal solution for your project (best car wax).

Best regards,

John Chris

Your quest for optimal HD quality videos from InfraWorks is indeed a journey. To enhance your results, consider the following:

Codec Experimentation: Test alternative codecs beyond WMV and DV. Explore H.264 or H.265 for improved compression without sacrificing quality.

Resolution Optimization: Adjust the resolution settings to strike a balance between quality and file size. Experiment with various resolutions to find the sweet spot.

Bitrate Adjustment: Fine-tune the bitrate settings. Sometimes, finding the right balance between bitrate and file size can significantly impact video quality.

Direct Rendering: Ensure your export settings are optimized for direct rendering. This may bypass additional processing steps, preserving quality.
