Draping feature

Hi,

I created a model by importing data source “Terrain in LandXML” and “Image in JPG”. Both those data are created with the help of third - party software.

How do I find a draping feature in Infraworks so I can drape a road on my model?

Regards,

Once you have your terrain data source configured, you have two options for drawing roads and draping them on the terrain:

  1. Create a design road, right-click and select "Drape Feature"
  2. Create a component road, right-click and select "Show Profile". From here you can adjust the vertical profile as necessary, or right-click and select "Drape Profile" to have InfraWorks get you something close.

Design roads are style-based roads and do not have as many editing tools available to them. They are mainly for visualization. Component roads offer much more flexibility.

See the attached screenshots for reference.

Hi,

I have tried your suggestions with unsuccessfully. I can draw a design road and right click but there is no "Draping feature" command.

Is it because all data I created from third - party software??

What version of InfraWorks are you using?

Hi @rimutaka,

sketched features in InfraWorks are draped to the surface automatically. Only imported features have the option to be draped, set an elevation or use the feature elevation.

Are you sure you have a "terrain" object in the data sources?

Regards,

Karsten.

Hi @rimutaka,

is it possible to share the model with me, I would like to test on my system.

For sharing and online model please use my company email address karsten.saenger(at)autodesk.com.

If you don't have the model online, please create a zip file of the model.sqlite and the model.folder and upload it to any cloud drive. Let me know if you want me to share a cloud drive folder with you.

Regards,

Karsten.

Are you sure? I am able to sketch a design road in a model and right-click to get the drape option.

@rimutaka are you able to sketch other items in your model? For example, sketching a coverage area should drape to the terrain as well. Does that work?

Hi Zachri,

Yes, I can make sketch of a coverage area and it will drape automatically.

Hi @mzjensen,

you are correct - and I never noticed that there is a "drape option" for planning roads (design roads existed in versions up to 2018).

I am wondering it the drape option makes sense at this place at all as the planning roads are draped to the terrain automatically.

Will clear that next...

Regards,

Karsten.

Ah OK, I had my terminology mixed up.

I think the drape option still makes sense because you can adjust the vertex elevations for planning roads. So if you change them after you initially sketch the road, then it is no longer draped to the terrain. There might be a situation where you want to get back to the original condition.

Hi Zachri,

How do you access draping option? Currently, I am using Infraworks 2018.

Attached is a screenshot to show available options for right – click command.

Sorry, I misspoke in my original post. The road that I drew in my example was a planning road, not a design road. I am using InfraWorks 2019, and design roads were removed in the 2019 version. So maybe the option will be there if you draw a planning road in 2018.

In the screenshot that you sent, can you click Show Profile View and then adjust the PVIs as necessary? If you want the road to drape perfectly like a coverage area does, then I think you’ll need to use a planning road.

Yes.......the only option available , if drape feature is unavailable, is adjust elevations in profile view like in Civil 3D.
