C3D - Surface coverage in IW

What is the best way to cover a civil 3d surface in IW after you have imported it?

I am having an issue with trying to cover the surface and have it match in with my google earth back ground.   There tends to be a vertical surface edge showing up at those locations.   When I add a coverage area or land area to cover up or adjust the slopes between the two, it then screws up the other side or create a larger vertical surface.   I have been hiding those edges with some grass and trees for the most part but now I am in a rural off alignment (open area) and it is hard to adjust.   Also, sometimes it will drape to the C3D surface but then when I put a land area to it to depot a land type, it will raise my ditches and flatten that area out where it should be a ditch.

Suggestions on how I can work with this?

Hi @Anonymous

I think what you need to do is either in Civil 3D created a surface daylight from the corridor to the terrain. The create a corridor surface and import that into InfraWorks, it will merge nicely into the existing terrain.

Alternatively, to patch terrain areas in InfraWorks, ty using the Land area tool. This tool must be activated on the InfraWorks start screen (right hand side) to be available in InfraWorks.
See the help files to learn how the land area tool works: InfraWorks Help: To add or modify land areas (preview)

Karsten.

That is exactly what I have done. But I want to drape that surface with a coverage area (grass or marsh grass) and it gives me a vertical edge at the border and then it will automatically adjust the coverage and flatten the ditches so the terrain is flat between the high point and the roadway and eliminate the ditch. I must be using the coverage area tool incorrectly or something?

Hi @Anonymous

I think I need to take a look at your model to say more, would that be possible?
If yes, I will open a support case for you for the data exchange.

Karsten.

If you can send me your email, I can add you as a user and you can pull the model down from the cloud and take a look at it.

Email me directly with your email.

Thank you,

Tom

Hi Karsten,

I will add you shortly.    Unfortunately, last week IW crashed and I lost a bunch of data, but not all of it.   Fortunately, I had downloaded the model to several other machines while testing out some video cards and other machines with various CPU in order to see what machines worked best in the office with IW.

Anyway, I accidentally removed the project from the cloud.  Can you refresh my memory on how I can load this project back up to my group on the cloud please?

Once I have that back up, I can then sync the project from one of the other work stations and then add you as a member so you can take a look at the model and see if you can help me out with my surface issues.

Thank you,

I think you should use the Grading tool.Capture1.JPG

Hi @Anonymous

if that problem occurs with component roads - then @Anonymous is right, the grading tool should work.

I was under the assumption that the issue is with corridor surfaces imported from Civil 3D.

To re-upload a model to the cloud, if the upload does not work for some reason, try creating a duplicate (from the tools finctions) and upload the copy of the model to the cloud.

Regards,

Karsten.

I did import the finished surface from C3D into IW.   Then I imported the alignment and used Road Components to create the visual roadway surface, ie. c&g,shoulders, beam guards etc.

Then for the grading surface, I wanted to just show some land forms and tried to drape the surface or use land area and in some areas it works fine, but for the majority, it will adjust the GOOGLE MAP surface and give me vertical edges where those coverages end.

Can you use the grading tool with Roadway Components?   I am not sure why i can not just drape my C3D surface beyond the shoulder and have it just stick to the c3d imported surface.

My system crashed last week and we lost some data and I am trying to pull that data back from another station.   As soon as I have that, I will get you loaded up as a user Karsten and see what you can find or help me with.   I will post some images as well.

Can you use the grading tool after you have places component roadway?   For the sloped areas?  My understanding is that was only useable inside the design roadway portion and not along with roadway components?
