C3D > IW > 3D MODEL FENCE

Hi all,

I am currently struggling with the following (seen it in action, but can't seem to find the right way to re-do it):

end goal:

- create a fence along a line/path from C3D (or shp file).

currently doing this:

- IW model is set to coordinate system Netherlands-RD

- created a civil3D file, set the location, and identified the coordinate system to Netherlands-RD

- draw a 3D polyline (not closed)

- MAPexport:

  - object type: Line

  - select the line maually

  - in options, driver options, i choose 3D shape files

- and then export

It's not showing up at all in IW... what am I doing wrong?

Regards,

Mark

Hi @Anonymous

Ok, I make a fence line this way:

- Create a 3d Poly in Civil 3D
- Export with MAPEXPORT
- When I import SHP into Infraworks, I select Road type

The trick is in Style of road

One option that may be simpler is to create a road style in IW360 that is stylized to be a fence (using Custom Profiles or Decorations), then import the line from C3D as an alignment.

Impressive workaround though! I would also follow @elliott.rosenfeld suggestion, probably the fastest.

If you see and check, it is possible to create any kind of forniture or decoration for outdoor blocks, setting also a regular distance between one piece and the other.

I use a 2D polyline for mapexport to .shp. When I bring it into Infraworks I configure the fence .shp as a barrier, instead of a road.

If the line isn't showing up at all, check your coordinate system again. Even try a different one. Sometimes I'll need to do that to get the line to appear.

Also, if you're making chain link fences, check out this neat trick: Creating Transparent Chain Link fences in Infraworks

Hey Jason,

Do you have a way to do this with a Chain link fence that has security barbwire on the top of it as well? I've been using a road style with a 3D model as a decoration, but I haven't found a good way to model the 90-degree corners.

Hey Kelby! Fence workflows have changed a bit since my last post above. Infraworks now has a "linear decoration" function that works well with fences. It still seems to use a transparent .png graphic as the fence style though, so if you're crafty with a photo editor you could add the chain link above any of the existing styles.

The new fence styles are stored here by default: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\InfraWorks\Resources\LocalLibrary\Styles\3D Model\Bridge Components

I wrote a blog about the new fences a while back with some tricks on getting them to show up continuous. https://atgusa.com/fences-in-infraworks-made-easy/

Have you tried this method before?
