Straight walkways and bike lanes with varying road width

Here is my problem that I just couldn't to solve. Any help would be appreciated.

I would like my road to have a certain total width and the greenspace could be narrower when there is bus stops or parking, etc. Now my bike paths and walkways make these bends and make the total width of the road bigger. I would like them to follow the black lines shown in the image below.

Is there any way to fix this? I tried to cut the road into sections and make different sections, but I still couldn't make the transitions look smooth.

Any ideas how to fix this?infraworks.JPG

Hi @pekka.vainola

Infraworks actually has 3 di´fferent road types - sketch roads, design roads, component roads.
It looks like as if you are using design roads. I think the easiest way for you to solve your issue is using component roads.
Please have a look at the help files for the details:

InfraWorks 360 Help: About Component Roads

When I do things like this, I create a different section, and modify that section to match the widths.

For example, below is a quick road I made in 3 sections. The main street section is the "Street with Sidewalk" style. For the bus bay I simply changed the lanes ahead/behind to widen the road. For the the part with the grass, I copied the "street with sidewalk" style, renamed it, and added greenspace between the curb and sidewalk (and removed the lightpoles). By modifying the width of the greenspace, I was able to get the sidewalk to line up. In your example, you'd need to reduce the width of the greenspace in your bus bay section in order to match.

This same style could be applied to the road section at top of the picture and it would all have the same overwall width.

Good luck! Your project sounds very exciting to work on!

Hi pekka,

I have been trying to accomplish what you are looking for using component roads, and have also been having difficulties creating smooth transitions between greenspace and lane components of variable width. I will send your question to the roads dev team and see what we can come up with.

Thanks!

Ok this took me a little tinkering, but I was eventually able to come up with a solution using component roads. (I only did this for one side of the road for the sake of time, but you could easily replicate this for both sides of the road. Here's what it looks like:

variablewidth_5.png

and here's how i did it:

1) Sketch your component road and add all components at full width, aligned to both the start and end of the roadway.

variablewidth_1.png

2) Insert a bus lane. (lane component). By default, components you insert are 30 meters in length, with one full width section that is 10m long, and two tapered sections that are also 10m long each.

3) Split each component that is adjacent to the bus lane. I split the greenspace, bike lane, and sidewalk lane where the transition in/out occur.

variablewidth_2.png

Here you can see that each split component now can be modified separately.

variablewidth_3.png

4) I went one extra step here, and split the Greenspace only, into three sections.

variablewidth_4.png

5) Next, I modified the width of my 3 separate 10m long greenspace components, using the Stack. Took a little trial and error to have the appropriate widths match up.

6) Then, I made sure that my greenspace, sidewalk, and bikepath are transitioning in/out appropriately. For help with component road transitions, check out this help article: http://help.autodesk.com/view/INFMDR/ENU/?guid=GUID-CB9A5DDF-B391-4977-80AA-064BE5C8CB24

7) and Voila! this is what I ended up with:

Side note: Why would there by greenspace between the curb and sidewalk in a bus bay? Are pedestrians and wheelchairs supposed to walk/roll over the grass to get on/off the bus?

Everyone's a critic.  Smiley Wink

@JasonArtley because that component was split this part into 3 segments, you could change the middle portion to a different material and there's your concrete walkway to the bus.

For those of you who would rather watch the steps required rather than read help docs, here's a short Screencast video showing what @elliott.rosenfeld outlined above. I shortened the steps a bit by NOT splitting the two outer components since they auto-magically fall back in line after modifying the transition in/out of the greenspace.

Thanks for creating the screencast Matt, I guess I'm old fashioned -- for some reason I just prefer to write out the answer, even though I do definitely see the benefit of using a shorter video. And I'm glad you checked whether or not the other two components needed to be split, I was wondering that myself after the fact..

Best,

You're welcome. I'm more of a visual person myself which is why I prefer the Screencasts (sometimes) over writing up a document, which certainly has its place/use.

Thanks everyone!

This forum is awensome. Spent a lot of time trying to find the answer by myself and with your help It really wasn't that hard.

I just need a new computer. My basic HP laptop isn't up for the job.

One more guestion:

Is it possible to make pavement transitions in junctions look like they should without having the same section on both roads.

Good question. I have been playing around with this and have (nearly) found a solution. I am able to inconsistently resolve this by splitting all my sidewalk, greenspace, curb, and bikelane components where the intersection object begins and the road ends, for both the primary and secondary road. I think some of my curve geometry needs to be tweaked to make this work for all 4 curb return areas, but you can see what I am going for here, I believe.

1) Here are where I made my splits to the roadside components:

splits.png

2) and here's what it looks like. Play around with that and see what you can do. I'll keep working to find a more consistent explanation for you. Thanks!

Greetings to all, and my congratulations for the answers by @elliott.rosenfeld, @Matt__W and the other colleagues, I find the information very interesting in this subject ...

@Matt__W, I'm sorry to ask you a question which is out of the question, but I find it curious in your video that you use the EXPERT ELITE label, I've tried to do something similar, put a stamp or anything on screencast videos, But I have not found any option that allows me to do that, I have to use an external video editor, add the watermark or stamp in the video and upload it to youtube, but in a screencast ?? I could not do it

Do you think it is possible either in this topic or internally you could indicate how to do that, to be able to place this EXPERT ELITE label in the screencast ?? I would really appreciate it ...

Again thanks for your answers and have a good day everyone ...

Thanks for replying, then the watermark is put on Infrawork, but not on SCREENCAST .... oooohhhh jejejejeje, I thought it was put in screencast, then this method only serves for infrawork, and not for other products like CIVIL 3D , Or is there any similar way to do that in C3D ??

Again thanks for the answer, I will put it into practice ...

@ajpancha Unfortunately the Screencast editor has very minimal editing capabilities so if you'd like a watermark on a video you created in Civil 3D you'd have to do it some third-party app.
