Unique Family Type Naming for Informed Design varients

Hi,

I am experimenting with the new Informed Design Add in for Inventor and Revit 2024. Relating to the BIM Properties, specifically the "Family Name Type".

I see that it is possible to link the "Family Name Type" to user and reference parameters in Inventor. In my case I have made the part number model dependent using iLogic.

My question is can the "Family Name Type" still be dependent on the model/ product definition when the Revit user generates a new product definition. So that the "Family Name Type" is individual for each product definition.

For example, An adjustable sized pipe support, the "Family Type Name" would be dependent on the pipe NB parameter the user selects in the Revit Informed design plug in.

So product definition No.1 would have a "Family Type Name" of "200NB Pipe Support"

and product definition No.2 would have a "Family Type Name" of "300NB Pipe Support".

Would be grateful for any help on this, Thank you

Matthew

Hi @matthewlenehanT54R3 Yes This is possible:)

My preferred method is to create a text-based named user parameter in Inventor to hold the Family type name.

Then, I'll use an iLogic rule to concatenate parameter and/or Property values, to create a unique family type name .

Finally, I use the BIM Properties panel to map the value of the Family Type Name text parameter to the family name field for the Revit output.

When a new variant is generated, the parameter values will update, which will update the family name parameter, which will be used to create the family type name of the RFA.

Is that helpful?

Hi Paul, thanks for this

So, I thought I had this done. When I edit my model in Inventor, the "Family Type Name" updates based of the geometry of the Inventor Model, using a text based user parameter that is driven off of geometry in the model.

When I produce a new product definition and publish it on the cloud to be customised in the Revit Add in. Upon creating a new variant from the product definition I want the user parameter and thus the "Family Type Name" to update at this stage based off of the geometry the Revit user selects in the Informed Design Plug in. My problem is that the user parameter that I have assigned my "Family Type Name" to, is not updating based off the geometry selected in the add Informed Design add in after I have generated a new variant. And thus not updating the "Family Type Name" BIM property in Revit.

Thanks so much,

Matthew

Hi Paul, I actually figured it out this morning, I had didn't understand the step regarding linking the iproperty/ parameter to the Revit Family table by the 'Instance'. So I have it up and running now, thanks a mill for your help

Hi Paul, I actually have another question related to this.

So now that I have the "Family Type Name" working and dependent on the variant, I have a query regarding the "Family Name", which by default is the Inventor file name as far as I can tell. What happens my models at the minute is when a user generates a new variant in Revit the following happens.

Variant 1: Family Name = Pipe_Support_TypeB

Variant 2: Family Name = Pipe_Support_TypeB_1

Variant 3: Family Name = Pipe_Support_TypeB_2

In this case the "Family Name" in Revit is different for each variant.

Revit Makes a new family for each variant. I would like to have just the one "Family Name", with the various "Family Type Name" that are dependent on the properties of the variant

So for example Variants 1-3 would all have the same "Family Name" = "Pipe_Support_TypeB" with different "Family Type Name" that are variant dependent.

Thanks a mill,

Matthew
