Copy and Paste between projects

Copy and Paste between projects

Right now I can go into sketch, select a few features and copy them within the same project.

I want the ability to copy features from one project to another.

For example, I have a sketch that has a few circles, and boxes, etc... that are arranged and I want to make part of another sketch in another project.   Right now, I have to recreate the sketches, when it would be really nice (and save me a lot of time), if I could just do a Copy from project A, then go into project B and paste into the sketch.

Currently you can insert a design (or saved sketch) from one project into a design that is open from another project. Have the design you want to insert into open, then browse to the design you want to insert, right-click, and then click Insert. Does that solve your copy-paste workflow?

solved my issue of bringing geometry from one project to another.  The disadvantage is that any 'extra' geometry must be deleted.  It would be better to select the geometry from one open sketch and paste into another open (being edited) sketch.  But this works in a pinch

Hello, I think that would be awesome since I have some documents with many screws, gears, etc and i want to copy only one body into other document tab already opened. This copy&paste works but it need to be in the same document.thanks

Here's a Tips thread that demonstrates how to copy sketch elements from one sketch into another sketch, the destination sketch can be in another design or in the current design.

I would like to add to this. I found a case where left clicking on the origin in the destination empty sketch in a different design project tab than the copied lines, did not trigger "paste" to show up in the right click menu. So I drew a line in the open destination sketch and left clicked on it, and right clicked and THEN "paste" was visible in the right click menu.

So sometimes, even clicking on the origin dot will not make paste available. I think this is a bug twice over then. Once because the destination sketch is open and paste should be available in that simple case, and twice, because even clicking on the origin won't always make it available. I had to draw a line and click on it to make paste available in the right click menu. After that, I pasted the lines I copied and all was well.

This issue of paste not showing in the right click menu in a valid paste situation is a fundemental class A bug in terms of user frusturation and should be fixed asap. I say valid because both source and destination sketches are in capture timeline-on mode. I have not yet looked at how the issue appears between other timeline on-off situations, because I wanted a clear cut case here of paste not behaving properly.

I noticed in general on copy/paste between sketches, there is a mode showing the previously selected lines (iwith a blue fuzzy look) visible over the grey canvas of the blank open destination sketch. Paste is not available when this is showing. Left click the destination sketch grey canvas, and it disappears, and then paste is available. Perhaps this is related to the bug. Maybe this modal switch is interfering with paste being available when the sketch is coming from outside the current design project, because after all there is no lines to show as having been selected because the selection happened in the other project.

Status changed to: Future Consideration

We totally get this pain-point, and the current is a result of our software architecture. This is definitely something we are planning to solve in future releases and what we need to do internally to make it happen.

Has any developments been made on the ability to transfer components between projects? Or is it still under future consideration?

Thanks

I agree the ability to select ALL a sketch eg lines, dimensions AND constraints, and copy paste almost anywhere is something I am missing

from Solidworks. Especially to past these onto a selected plane, and then only need to re-attach origin dimensions.

OR go one better than solidworks  and auto reattach all to origin:-) Plus have ability to move it.
