Why not have the view range set as a property controlled by a view template? Even if you don't ultimately want all the views controlled by the same template, you can use view templates to propagate the view range to multiple views and then remove the view template from that view - the view range property will remain set unless you override it manually or with a new view template. This then ties in easily with the ability to uncheck which properties are controlled by view templates, as you can use an initial view template to force the view range and then set the final view template you use for V/G appearance to not control the view range.
