Managing similar family types

We have a few complex families with a lot of parameters. An example is our family that defines the connection between windows and walls. In this family we define the (nested family) type for the sill, threshold, architraves, lintel and the divergence of the opening in every wall layer relative to the window exterior.

In many cases we have to duplicate the family type for only one or two diverging parameters. All the other parameters should stay the same.

Currently, there is no easy way to manage corresponding parameters between family types and I would really like to see that changed. I'm thinking in the direction of adding an extra step between families and types, lets call it a "master type" or "parent". On the next level you could create sub types that inherit all parameter values from it's master/parent, except the ones you uncheck. Think about the way you can include or exclude view properties from a view template. This would make it much easier to manage complex families and their types and prevent flaws caused by overseeing a parameter in one of the types.
