Fix the Tag by Category leader line option

In Revit 2025, the Tag by Category tool has been revised. The check box for Leader Line is now in Properties. This is problematic because the Leader Line box cannot be checked or unchecked before an element to be tagged is pre-selected. If the Tag tool is selected, and the cursor moves over any element that does not have that tag loaded into the project, the Properties Panel will change and the check box is no longer available. When trying to tag an element, the Leader Box is checked by default. But it doesn't show up in the Properties until the element I want to tag is highlighted, and the Leader Line box is checked and I want it unchecked, I have to move the cursor over some other element to get to the Properties, in doing so the Leader Line check box goes away. The work around is drag the view so the element to be tagged is partially hidden in the Properties, so the cursor can move there directly from the object. SO ANNOYING!!! Such poor User Interface!!! Put the Leader Line box back in the task bar and make it available ALL THE TIME!!! Who makes these decisions???!!! How can Autodesk make an already terrible user interface even worse???!!! The development team seems to have no real world user experience and understanding of how we use Revit on a daily basis.

Agreed, If I knew of this change in workflow. I would most likely skipped this version of Revit. Hopefully this gets fixed in a Hotfix. Extremely annoying.

Please do something about this AutoDesk. This has added too much work for me.

With the current amount of bugs, this seems like a step away from efficiency. Please bring back the leader line box out of the properties pane!

I was just shown by a coworker that you can turn the leader line off by selecting the 2nd option under the Leaders tab in the Modify tab section. It looks like it is grayed out, but it is not when you click on it. Not the most straight forward but I hope this helps.

@NoahFCE - thanks for the tip. This is still less than friendly to users. But your comment about it appearing greyed out is indicative of the biggest issue with any software I've seen in at least a decade.

Beginning in R2024, AD changed the icons. Why? Only malicious reasons come to mind for why this might be. While countless fundamental issues exist, we get changes in icon appearances. Even if it were a move toward better functionality via improved visibility (instead of what it is: the opposite of that), the appearance of icons should not change often. It just forces users to learn one more thing year to year, which would also be fine if users were not forced to be proficient in many release years of the same product.

Revit is the only technical software to my knowledge that has zero inter-year compatibility.

The image included in @NoahFCE 's comment shows how the icons are now harder to distinguish from one another AND it's nigh impossible to tell if an icon or a line in a  drop down - is greyed out.

The sheer frequency that Revit decides to not allow certain functions is similarly mind-boggling.

FOr instance, I cannot SCALE symbols or detail groups!?!?!  (Sorry that was a tangent and unrelated).

Obviously, no one who ever uses Revit has less than perfect vision, even at the end of a 14 hr day.

As my work, I have been designing and tagging HVAC ductworks for years but I wonder if this would benefit me and others as well.

The feature for tagging ductworks has an option with check box for adding or not adding leader.

I believe that there is no keyboard shortcut or short key to check or uncheck the check box for adding or not adding leader to a duct tag without moving mouse cursor to click the check box manually.

Does anyone know if there is such a command in Revit 2023 ~ Revit 2025?

Thank you.

It seems this is a pretty simple bit of coding to be fixed? It certainly is a backwards step for usability, practicality and user sanity. especially when elevations are still outside of the properties box so you have to be able to flick between the two locations to tag the leader box. Please keep tag leader checkbox out of properties up the top of the screen where it was.

And this applies not only to leader lines but also to the tag orientation. These used to be available on the Options Bar. I can think of no reason they are not now. Fix this, Revit Team!

Please put it back the way it was. It is negatively affecting our productivity and offers nothing useful in return.

So this has been an issue since 2025 came out - there is a post about this above from June 2024. BUT ITS NOT FIXED. Please fix this! - this is not a minor issue - this is EXTREMELY frustrating and a waste of time.

And it wasn't broke to begin with!

There have been two major updates to 2025 since it's release - 2025.2 and 2025.3, and this issue has not been resolved. It functioned just fine the way it was. There were no issues that needed to be addressed.

It's immensely frustrating that Autodesk puts resources into "updating" tools and functions that actually do work and cause no productivity issues or unnecessary stress, yet continue to ignore a multitude of tools and functions that users have been pleading and begging to be addressed for years, even decades now.

They have to restore the ability to place a tag with a free end leader!! it doubles or triples the time spent to have to change it after placement every time. This is maddening.

Tagging is time consuming enough without this dreadful update.

Please revert to earlier years functionality - keep the leader switch (on/off) on the options bar and bring back the ability to use a free end

Please add a keyboard shortcut option for toggling these settings on and off.

I am quite confused on how this function is released this way.  Does the team actually use the function and test it thoroughly to ensure its functionality prior to releasing it to the public?  Surely if you had tested it, you would have seen the obvious issue.

i also do not understand why this wasnt given a Hotkey assignment or at least the ability to assign a key to its function while you were at it.

This iteration of Revit seems like a waste of time.

Our company just discovered this issue today. Like people have said this would drastically increase the time it takes our team to tag our ductwork/piping/electrical fixtures. There HAS to be a way to change the default to Free End instead of Attached End.

Agreed. Autodesk, please fix this. It is very annoying.

Autodesk please listen to us and at least make it an option to use it either way - in the properties box its a real workflow killer. Every time a tag is placed you then have to navigate to the properties panel and uncheck it. Or at least give it a hotkey, which would be even better. Its the most stupid 'enhancement' they could have thought of

The only workaround I have found is to pan my screen so that the object that I'm trying to tag is directly under the ribbon.  Then if you hover over the object to be tagged and pull your mouse straight up onto the ribbon it allows you to move your mouse out of the modeling environment while still keeping the item to be tagged previewed in your properties.  As long as you keep your mouse over the ribbon and do not move over the modeling window again, you can move your mouse over to the properties and check/uncheck the leader box.  But it's definitely a much more convoluted process than it used to (or needs to) be.

Autodesk, please fix this.

Does no one who didn't just spec/write them test these UI changes? Bonkers.

Much better UI change: let ctrl toggle the leader. Then I don't care where your silly button goes.
