It sounds like you are talking about the Element Hide command which can be found on the right-click menu under "Hide In View". This is a permanent (though reversible) action to hide the element selected in that view ONLY (not in parent or overlapping dependent views). It doesn't affect the view template, it affects the view.
If you want to hide something temporarily, you might want to try the Hide Element command which can be found at the bottom of your view as a pair of glasses, see below:
This will put a cyan border around your view much like the purple Temporary View Properties (though if you also have Temporary View Properties enabled the border will remain/change to Purple as an overriding feature, you can still see you have Temporary Hide/Isolate on in the top left next to Temporary View Properties).
As you can see in the screenshot, you have more than just hiding a selection of elements, and you can reset the view from the glasses as well.
