If Revit were to simply compute the area of the fitting solid surfaces, for example, a round tee, there may be some surfaces on the solids that aren't part of the fitting, besides just the connectors. For example, where the branch 'solid' intersects the main 'solid', there is a hole in the main, and the connected end of the branch isn't actually there, and there is some 'trimming' of the branch cylinder to get it to conform to the main.
Can you elaborate a bit on what details go into a project estimate? E.g., is it just the area of the fitting? do you account for other factors, such as material (e.g., heavy gauge vs light gauge sheet metal), etc?
