Intelligent Schematic

What I would like to see is some flexibility in the way schematics are approached.  On the one hand we need the ability to link a complete design and produce an accurate and detailed schematic.  This is something that you already included into Revit Roadmap and I will not focus on it here, however I will elaborate on early stage schematics.

This means a fast, easy-to-create schematic that needs to be produced before a model is drawn in Revit.  So, an independent drawing tool in the detail view that gives us access to parameters.

When I was designing a ventilation system in 2014 I was surprised that schematics in Europe are mostly drawn in AutoCAD, even if Revit is used.  I had an idea and implemented semi-automated data management for schematics. Since then using Revit for Schematic gives lots of benefits. See link to video below:

At the early stage we have a list of rooms, numbers and required air flow rates. We can place detail items into the detail view and store parameters, then decide if this is supply or extract and assign different family types (as shown in the video). Nowadays we can automate this process so that creation can be even more automated compared to my video, as sizes and locations of boxes can also be automated. So let’s assume we can quickly generate rooms with data and required air flow rate.  So in this step all we need is to control detail items via x,y coordinates in the detail view – i.e. locations of our room boxes.

The missing step is drawing ductwork and pipework; currently we need to use standard lines. It is possible to draw these by hand and I personally believe that this is not a big problem. However what is missing is data information and ability to use pipe/duct placeholder in this view. Also, placeholders will enable us to have some smart data associated with the lines. In this case, when we connect placeholders to our objects (i.e. air terminals) air flow rates will be read and then by connecting the lines (i.e. ducts) we could have air flow rates and sizes of ducts. We could easily size by velocity  (e.g. 2-8m/s) and tag placeholders in detail view to show air flow rate, size and velocity. This would bring a completely new level of freedom and integration.

I can suggest a few options for how placeholders can read air flow from detail items. There could be connector with symbols in each detail item, this being the point where we connect a placeholder. Another, potentially easier option is that placeholders are made to read special embodied parameters (i.e. Schematic Flow & Return) from detail items.

Once implemented we could generate a very complex network not only for building pipes and ducts but also some external services.

Please let me know if you need any additional explanation. I will be happy to assist.
