Welcome to the Revit Ideas Board! Before posting, please read the helpful tips here. Thank you for your Ideas!

Enhance element ID functions

Element ID's can be useful for locating elements in the model.  However, they are cumbersome to use,  Suggestion is to show the element IDs in the instance properties of the element.  This could be a new category in the instance properties, such as 'More' or 'Advanced'.  This section might even include warnings that the element is generating.

I hope Autodesk interested my idea :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:   I would like see  that info of ``Element ID`` on Properties Palet for all elements also we can use this parameter during arange any schedule.

Still I am using some add in as below link. But it is not working sometimes.

I think it will be much better to add the "element ID" to the instant properties for each item , other than existing in a separate icon at the  "modify tab" .

As this info. ( element ID) is needed in some cases after linking files and need to know ID of item in the linked file , but we cannot get unless open the linking file itself.

But it will be much useful to get this info once tabbing on the item to be selected from the link and to get the ID from its "Instant parameters".

Revit has a severe lack of being able to locate items relatively quickly in a project.  I would request that the Element ID is turned on as a schedulable parameter.  (Specifically on MEP objects, I'm sure it would help the Arch/Structure guys.)

This would give the ability to generate 1 schedule with element ID turned on, screenshot it, and locate items thru the project that need addressing, instead of constantly returning to the schedule to use "Find Items" which is a bit of a slow process one item at a time.

Unfortunately Element Ids are not stable. In a worshared environment in
particular, element ids will shuffle and the element to which they
previously referred will no longer be the same element after reload latest
or sync with central.
Unique Id is the only stable (within one project) representation
(identifier) of the element.

That said, you are free to create your own shared parameter on all element
categories and fill it up with the element id via the API directly or
Dynamo.

These important items of information need to be converted into properties, and listed on the standard palette. Also, they need to be made available for scheduling. You really can do this. It's not hard :cara_guiñando_un_ojo:

Dynamo does a lot of things for us, but it can be a real headache with work sharing as well. Well what about exposing the unique identifier? Something we can use to track parts that's already nested on families for quarry?

You'd have to give us a way, like "Find Items" as well.

Come on guys, we're getting off topic.  Adding additional apps across multiple users isn't a good solution from an administration standpoint.  The information is already available on the parts, Autodesk just needs to expose them to scheduling.  The original post isn't a 3rd party application, or custom coding ran by a 3rd party application (Dynamo.)  I also speak from an administration standpoint, not just speaking for myself but a company of users that would all like a similar tool.

Been using Revit coming up on a decade, and there's ENOUGH work arounds, add ons, and patches for a lifetime.

Ever submit a ticket to Autodesk support?

"Is it your add ons?" "Well we can't help diagnose why your project browser is crashing opening a view because you have Autosection installed."  "Please revert to a clean installation of Revit, try your issue again, and if it still persists respond to this ticket #".

In schedule , it will be very useful that ID of elements can be inserted to schedule parameter

very greet idea and to be shown also in property panel

Yes it is

Good idea....if you need it now you have in you tube how you can do it with the dynamo...

Yes, this would be a very helpful feature to have. I'm assuming that dcesko's dynamo script is copying the elements ID to another parameter, which provides you with the information you need, but it's a bit redundant and we should have to do it. It should just be available to us directly.

i really glad to here that , not only me need this feature

I think the idea of having apps and scripts is what makes things so powerful. everyone uses software for their purposes so Revit gives us a basic platform to model buildings and collaborate with one another. Depending on what your scope of work is you need it to different things. the beauty of a central model is that only one person needs to have the add-in if you are just filling in parameter data. Then all they do is sync and everyone else has it.

Why not have each elements element ID in a read only parameter? Would be helpful for coordination.

yes, its very usefull

This will save us from having to add a parameter and run the dynamo.

And, for #$@# sake, let us Copy and Paste the Element IDs!

Especially from the Warnings dialog

@Joey_JM  Thank you for the suggestions! I will look through them and combine the most similar.

The elementId property is really usefull to distinguish individual elements, but as it is right now this property can only be accessed through the API. It would be really usefull to be able to see the elementId in the elements properties browser in Revit, so that it's easier for the user who doesn't wish to use Dynamo or the API to pinpoint and keep track of individual elements.

Many thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

Hi, @jeroen.van.halderen ,

Here is a similar Idea: Enhance element ID functions - Autodesk Community. I would be happy to merge your Idea with this one for you!

Thank you for your submission!

Kimberly

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones that's okay, I'll be happy to be merged with the other post you mentioned.

I would LOVE to be able to schedule an element ID. SO frequently I have a huge list of ID's and for some reason, select by ID doesn't actually select anything and I can't figure out why. it clearly corresponds to an element in my model, but i can't get access to the data.
