If you are adding something to the wall type and then want it to be different in other rooms, you will ultimately have to have another wall type. The split region command in the wall takes virtually no time and you could set the base(in your example) as a default material and then go around and paint all those faces with your paint brush if you are trying to schedule materials. So as it is currently designed I think it does what you need, unless I am not understanding what you are asking for?
