Yesssss....
I had this in an idea that was unfortunately removed by the admin for not meeting the "criteria" - and it had 40-ish votes. Hopefully this one can recapture some of that user frustration.
I don't think simply capturing the opening will 100% solve the problem as the opening size required does not always match the architect's family either. For instance - are you going to have different doors on the ground floor or at elevated floors where the wall opening is enlarged to allow the slab pour to go through the opening as well?
I would like to see doors/windows not mapped as generic "openings" via Copy Monitor. Rather- I would like to have a mapping dialog similar to that available with columns, walls, and floors where i could map the architectural door types to structural "door" types. There is no rule in Revit that a "Door" has to contain any solid geometry - what if the door is simply a hosted void (an opening...) - but it is a loaded family with Type and Instance rather than a system family of Opening?
This would allow:
1. Structural Engineers to take better ownership of the required opening size
2. Bypassing the wall as the container of the door and window changes in the Coord Review Dialog - when a door or window changes - it's not the wall that needs changing - it's the door or window.
This functionality already exists for Columns, Plumbing Fixtures, Lights, etc....why not doors and windows?
