Taking a power outlet as a typical example, if you open it in the family
editor there will be some model elements that represent the physical form
of the outlet, these will probably have visibility settings so they don't
show up in plan views.
There will also be some detail items, either symbol lines in the 'Ref
Level' plan view or a detail family that is nested in the outlet family.
Our families use the nested detail family option and that family has a
parameter that we have called 'offset' that moves the symbol left or right
depending on the setting of another parameter which is a yes/no and
determines if the direction.
In short the solution isn't built into the standard out-of-the-box families
from AutoDesk, instead it is in the way we have built our families. We
built some of these ourselves and some we brought from RevitWorks - if you
want to see how it is done go to their website and download the (free)
sample file.
