Welcome to the Revit Ideas Board! Before posting, please read the helpful tips here. Thank you for your Ideas!

Join geometry for Revit Linked models

When working with the Architectural and Structural model is requiered to get the columns, beams, floors and walls to be joined in order to get the correct representation at the floor plans, section, etc.

There are some solutions like this (Joining walls between host model and linked model) that are not efficient because it needs a lot of manual work and this leads to errors or inconsistencies when there are changes.

It would be a great idea if Revit could join revit links with your project. Exemple: when i link a structural project to my architectural project, and join the disciplines, it would be great.

Walls in the host model do not join with walls from linked models, so they appear as the following pictureJoining walls to linked model.PNG,

It is odd, and unprofessional to submit a drawing like this one, this should be easily done to avoid such situations.

Ability to cut / join linked revit geometry from model object.

This will greatly facilitate the work with linked structural models.

Now we have to create a duplicating geometry of constructive elements, which increases the amount of unnecessary work and the risk of coordination issues.

it will be very awesome if we can join elements between links , like joining between walls in the Arch model & columns in the SE link

This is definitely a must have function!

Must have function! all linked files should act like this natively when it comes to element relationships between different categories.

This idea has been submitted many times under different names. I can't believe we do a huge complicate copy/monitor just to graphically join our walls, floors and columns. It's time to throw this workflow out the window and do some real architecture work.

@Anonymous

elements specially SE columns are changed many times during project live time
some new types with new sizes created till the project end and submitted and tracking all those changed by using copy/monitor is real headache ,
one of important Concept of using BIM & 3D modeling that architectures & engineers focus on engineering problems and the software is suppose to handle the drafting issues

-what workflow you mean & why it will been thrown out the window?

Using copy/monitor just to graphically fix he joint of columns and floor slabs to walls is silly. I will just be using detail items. Realistically, Revit should allow us to join these graphically instead of doing these ridiculous workaround and duplication of 3d information. We don't need the copy part unless we specifically need to copy and change something from the linked model. we still need the monitor part however, as things change like you mentioned.

I would add one thing to this: Attach top/base should also be able to attach to linked files.

@Anonymous very good addition

I've posted the same Idea in April 2017, it's still there. If we can combine these two together, we'd get more votes for it. I do not know how this is not already an option.

I think the same idea of joining linked files was posted at March 2017 , wishing to compile both.

It is a very important wish.

Any updates yet? I can't wait for this feature. Is it available in 2019?

Hello,

With the industry using faster "live" rendering software like "Enscape" I feel this is going to demand some sort of ability to control linked files and the correlation of voids cutting hosts.

Any developmental work being done toward this?

Here we are, almost 2020. Revit version 2020 is released. Cant do this still. Unreal Autodesk. unreal.

Dear Revit Team,

Currently, I see that there is a limitation when it comes to joining elements from linked files with elements present in the local file. Specifically, I would like to suggest the implementation of a functionality that allows the direct union of elements, such as walls, floors, beams, pillars, among others, present in files linked with local elements, without the need for complex procedures.

The absence of this ability to unite elements of different origins impairs the accuracy of quantities and the correct representation of the elements, directly impacting the quality of the project. We understand that effectiveness and practicality in handling these elements are fundamental for cohesive and efficient BIM modeling.

While there are temporary solutions such as using invisible line styles, I recognize that these approaches are inefficient in large-scale projects and do not fully meet the demands of projects that require the seamless integration of different sources.

I appreciate your consideration of this suggestion and believe that implementing this functionality will not only improve the quality of projects, but also provide a more intuitive and efficient experience for Autodesk Revit users.

Yours sincerely,Erik Hianke

This also lead to have a lot of clashes showing up, for example between structural columns and architectural walls , ceilings, floors, because ther eis not a way to cut around the columns or simple joint the elements so that the clash detections software do not detect it as a clash.

Any option for this ?
