Agreed.  Not only that, but the process of importing the 3D CAD into a Revit family by its very nature breaks the link to the original 3D CAD file, requiring the deletion and re-import of the 3D CAD model, then reloading of the family for all affected files with every update within the source 3D CAD file (or the creation of another container Revit model that holds the families that are constantly being updated). 

 

Obviously the capability exists within Revit to classify the 3D CAD as a Generic Model (by the whole "import 3D CAD into family" process), it seems an easy thing to just make it a toggle button within the LINKED dwg properties to make it cuttable.
