I agree with @Anonymous I don't think this is a general Revit problem. We have project around 1 GB large and they don't take that much time to upgrade, nor do they give many errors.

 

Though I must say opening older families in R2018 often gives several warnings related to referenaces and dimensions, oddly the family doesn't "break" and still works.

 

 

@cuen.saul Before upgrading the project, open it with audit in their current Revit version, purge the file and Save As, this will lower the file size. Then upgrade the project.
