Family preview in Coordination Settings - Type Mapping dialog box.
A common practice for Electrical MEP users is to link to the architect's model and copy/monitor the lighting fixtures the architect has placed in their model. Using the batch copy is quite a time saver and by using the Coordination settings you can automatically change all of one lighting fixture family (generally a standard fixture) to a specific fixture family that is being specified by the electrical designer. As handy as this is, it is often the case that upon import you find that all of the architect's 2x4 fixtures that are nicely placed into the ceiling grid are rotated and slightly offset because the fixture family used by the MEP contractor has a different origin and rotation than the family used.
A nice feature to add to Revit would be in the Coordination settings dialog box by the behavior table there could be a preview icon that would w up when an item in the table was selected. The icon would be a small preview to show the default orientation of the family item selected so that you could see if they were oriented the same or not. Then there could also be settings for the host model side to set the rotation to +90 degrees or whatever to get the new fixtures to insert correctly in the host model.
Here is the current dialog box:
And here is a rudimentary mock-up of what I am proposing: (pretend I actually selected a different fixture instead of the "Copy original Type)
Another way to fulfill this request would be to require the orientation of one item as soon as the batch copy command is used. SO Revit would zoom into one instance of the proposed fixture and you would have to approve the location or rotate and place it then whatever rotation and offset used would be applied to all the new fixtures of that family type. I hope this makes sense. It would be similar to selecting rotate and scale upon insertion of a block in AutoCAD.
